Gordon K. McCallum
Gordon K. McCallum (born May 26, 1919 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 10, 1989 in Dorset , England ) was an American sound engineer .
Life
McCallum was born in Chicago but worked in the UK for most of his career . There he began in 1944 as a sound assistant on David Lean's film comedy Wonderful Times , the first of a total of six films together with Lean. By the end of his career in 1984 he was involved in well over 300 films; in the 1940s, often without being mentioned in the credits. Between 1964 and 1983 he worked on seven films from the James Bond film series. He also worked frequently with the director Gerald Thomas , including some of the titles in the Carry-On film series . His other notable films include Fahrenheit 451 , Blade Runner, and Pink Floyd - The Wall .
In 1971 he and John Bramall were nominated for an Oscar for the first time in the Best Sound category for Ryan's daughter . The following year he was nominated twice, for James Bond 007 - Diamond Fever and Anatevka . Together with David Hildyard , he was awarded the Oscar in the category Best Sound for the latter film. He received a last Oscar nomination in 1979 for Superman , but he could not win another Oscar.
His last work in film was the superhero film Supergirl in 1984. McCallum died in Dorset in 1989 at the age of 70 .
