David Sidney Hildyard (born May 1916 in London , United Kingdom ; † February 19, 2008 in the Czech Republic ) was a British sound engineer and two-time Oscar winner.

Life

The younger brother of the cameraman Jack Hildyard received his education before the Second World War and married his first wife Eileen in 1939 before he was drafted during the war. Right at the end of the war in 1945 he found a connection to the British film industry and was hired as a sound assistant by the Denham Studious. In this capacity, Hildyard was mostly unnamed in well-known entertainment films such as Irrtum im Jenseits (1946), Der kupferne Berg (1946), Jim Ackland under suspicion of murder (1947), Adam and Evelyne (1949), The Treasure Island (1950) and Das teilte Herz ( 1954) involved.

In the mid-1950s, Hildyard began to work independently as a sound engineer and, since the end of the same decade, has also been brought in for lavish Hollywood productions, which, however, were shot almost exclusively in European locations, such as Salomon and the Queen of Sheba , 55 days in Beijing , The Downfall of the Roman Empire , Circus World and The Last Battle in Spain and then The Taming of the Shrew , Doctor Faustus , Barbarella , Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, A Touch of Sensuality and The Secret of Santa Vittoria in Italy.

David Hildyard received an Oscar for best sound for two of his works at the beginning of the 1970s, the musical adaptation Anatevka , which was made in Yugoslavia (today's Croatia) and the contemporary cabaret staged by Bob Fosse in Munich . In later years he mostly worked on unambitious and artistically hardly remarkable mainstream films, which this time were mostly made in the USA.

In some of his films, the sound engineer Hildyard also met his brother Jack, who was the camera manager there. After the end of his career, David Hildyard and his third wife Maria settled in the Czech Republic. He was dependent on the use of a wheelchair .
