Jack Hildyard

Jack Hildyard (born March 17, 1908 in London , England ; † September 9, 1990 ibid) was a British cameraman who worked in over 80 films. The sound designer and two-time Oscar winner David Hildyard ( Anatevka , Cabaret ) is his brother.

life and work

Hildyard started out as a clapperboard beater at Elstree Studios in 1932 . In 1934 he was the first camera assistant (focus puller) in Marcel Varnel's film Freedom of the Seas, responsible for the focus. In the following years he worked for the chief cameramen Harry Stradling Sr. ( The novel of a flower girl and visit to the night , both 1938), Mutz Greenbaum ( Pimpernel Smith , 1941) and Robert Krasker ( The holy fire , 1943 and Heinrich V. , 1944) as a camera operator. In 1945 he was one of the cameramen of the film Caesar and Cleopatra by Gabriel Pascal , along with Jack Cardiff , Robert Krasker and Freddie Young . At Peter Ustinov's Film School for Secrets from 1946, Jack Hildyard first worked as head cameraman.

In 1952 Hildyard began working with director David Lean , for whom he shot the films The Unknown Enemy (1952), I Am Lord Of The House (1954), Dream Of My Life (1955) and The Bridge On The Kwai (1957). For the latter work, Hildyard received the Oscar for best color photography in 1957 .

In the 1970s, Jack Hildyard shot with Arab filmmakers, including Mohammed - The Messenger of God (1976) and Omar Mukhtar - Lion of the Desert (1979), both of whom were directed by Moustapha Akkad .

Jack Hildyard was one of the founding members of the British Society of Cinematographers in 1949 , which awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990 and of which he was President from 1965 to 1966.
