Hotel International (Original title: The VIPs ) is a British film drama directed by Anthony Asquith from 1963.

action

London Heathrow Airport is closing due to thick fog . The passengers on the flight to New York will be accommodated in the Hotel International after a long wait . Among them is the frustrated and neglected Frances, who wants to leave her husband, Paul Andros, a multi-million dollar entrepreneur, to start a new life with her lover, playboy and gamer Marc. There is the film director Max Buda, who, accompanied by the aspiring actress Gloria Gritti, wants to start a new project, but who is also threatened with high tax back payments in Great Britain if he does not leave the country by midnight. Finally the industrialist Les Mangrum is on his way to New York with his secretary Miss Mead to negotiate with his bank. He wants to prevent the takeover of his company by a corporation. The Duchess of Brighton is among the passengers. The impoverished noblewoman intends to take a position as deputy hotel manager in Florida to save her English country estate from being sold.

In the course of the plot, Andros, who rushes to the airport, manages to persuade his wife to stay. Miss Mead, who is secretly in love with her boss, also manages to save her boss's company from bankruptcy through Andros' financial help. The Duchess of Brighton's money problems are also cleared up and the plane takes off for New York the following day, twelve hours late.

background

The episode of the couple who want to flee to New York is based on a true story. Vivien Leigh wanted to start a new life with her lover Peter Finch . However, Leigh's husband Laurence Olivier managed to intercept his wife at London Airport and bring her back home.

Sophia Loren was initially planned for the role of Frances . But Taylor, who had been romance with Richard Burton since filming Cleopatra , wanted to perform with him again. In view of the seemingly favorable publicity situation, MGM was very willing to respond. Taylor's salary was $ 1 million and Burton received $ 500,000. Both also had a 20% share in sales, making the film a total of $ 2.8 million. The total revenue from the film, which cost nearly $ 3 million to make, was approximately $ 14 million.

The abbreviation “VIP” in the original film title stands for “Very Important Person” (Eng. “High” or “large animal”).

The phone number Elizabeth Taylor gives in the film (Grosvenor 7060) was MGM's London office number at the time the film was shot.

The German film The Endless Night by Will Tremper , shot almost at the same time, was thematically similar, but was rated significantly better by the critics.

Reviews

Adolf Heinzlmeier and Berndt Schulz described the film in the lexicon “Films on TV” as “simple-minded, talkative grand hotel clothes” that were “maudlin and mendacious”. Nevertheless, there are "rays of hope through Maggie Smith, Orson Welles and Margaret Rutherford". (Rating: 1½ out of 4 possible stars = moderate) For the lexicon of international films, it was a matter of “[e] in a melodrama staged at great expense with a famous cast, which tries to get social criticism, but remains largely superficial and clichéd and never goes beyond emotional instant conversation. "

"Margaret Rutherford in the role of the Duchess of Brighton shines in the star-studded melodrama about love, money and jealousy," said the television magazine Prisma .

Awards

The film was considered a success especially for Margaret Rutherford . For the supporting role of the impoverished noblewoman she received the Oscar , Golden Globe , Laurel Award and the award of the American National Board of Review . Maggie Smith was also nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Young Actress for the part of Miss Mead . Cinematographer Jack Hildyard received a British Film Academy Award nomination .

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency awarded the production the rating “valuable”.
