Joan Benham

Joan Benham (born May 17, 1918 in London , † June 13, 1981 in Westminster , London) was a British actress .

Life

Benham's career began as a stage actress in the West End of London in the late 1930s . Even if her acting activity later concentrated mainly on British television, she took on theater roles at regular intervals of her career. On Broadway in 1954 she played Helena in the revival of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream as partner of Patrick Macnee in the role of Demetrius.

Joan Benham became famous for her portrayal of Lady Prudence Fairfaix, a good friend of the Bellamy family in the series Das Haus am Eaton Place . This regularly recurring, continuous series role, she played 1971-1975 in all five seasons of this ITV- produced London family story from the beginning of the 20th century to the time of the Great Depression .

Benham also took on roles in motion pictures. She is remembered here mainly through two roles: as the housemother Alice Fanbraid in the Miss Marple film adaptation Mörder ahoy! after Agatha Christie and as Secretary Miss Potter in Hotel International ( The VIPs ). In both films she played alongside Margaret Rutherford .

She also played from 1972 to 1973 in the English TV series Doctor in Charge and in 1974 in the series Pater Brown . For British television she appeared in film adaptations of plays, such as in Lady Windermeres Fan by Oscar Wilde . In 1981, Benham played her final role as Melinda Spry on the British sitcom Terry and June .
