Nikolauskapelle in Geretsried

The Nikolauskapelle is located on the federal road 11 between Wolfratshausen and Königsdorf in the area of the old Geretsried . It was consecrated on September 18, 1722 by the Freising Bishop Eckher von Kapfing .

history

In terms of canon law, the Nikolauskapelle in Geretsried was a branch church that belonged to the parish of Königsdorf until 1951. The Geretsried “St. Niclas Gottshaus” was first mentioned in 1315 in the Matricula Conradia , a comprehensive description of the diocese of Freising .

The new building of the chapel in its present form was necessary after the previous church fell into disrepair at the beginning of the 18th century. After the establishment of the political community Geretsried and the Catholic parish of Maria Hilf in 1950, responsibility for the St. Nicholas Chapel was transferred from the parish of Königsdorf to the parish of Maria Hilf in the following year.

Today the chapel is listed on the digital map of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising as a subsidiary church of the Geretsried Maria-Hilf parish. The parish emerged from the independent parish curate of Geretsried, which was established on March 1, 1952.

Building

The chapel is an octagonal central building under a simple monastery vault, with a square tower in the southwest and a short octagonal tower with an onion dome. The roof of the church and the onion of the tower are each decorated with a gold-plated ball and a double cross.

The type of the St. Nicholas Chapel in Geretsried is similar to the pilgrimage church Maria im Elend near Dietramszell.

Furnishing

Altar of the Nikolauskapelle Geretsried

The altar is on the west side of the octagonal church space.

The altarpiece with St. Nicholas , painted in 1858 by the painter Anton Eder, rises above the neo-baroque cafeteria made of marbled wood in a gilded frame . The altarpiece is framed on the right and left by medallions of the fourteen helpers in need . In the altar extension , which is supported by two silver-plated, winding columns, there is a double medallion with the images of Saint Emmeram and Saint Mary Magdalene and above it the Christ monogram IHS in gilded ornaments .

The rest of the furnishings of the altar are simple: the Sorrowful Mother of God, silver candlesticks and a mess desk with inlays, as is the church interior: wall cross, 14 stations of the cross and 12 crosses of the apostles.

Bells

Until the First World War there were two bells in the tower of the St. Nicholas Chapel , which were removed and melted down for war purposes.

In the meantime two new bells have been donated. The larger one was cast in 1974 in the Perner bell foundry in Passau. It bears the inscription on the crown: “DEO GLORIA, URBI LAETITIA; ORBI PAX “(Glory to God, Joy to the City, Peace to the World).

Preservation and use of the chapel

After the founding of the parishes of Maria Hilf and the Holy Family in the meanwhile independent refugee community of Geretsried, the St. Nicholas Chapel was no longer of pastoral importance.

In 1967 Geretsried citizens founded the registered, non-profit association interest group for the preservation of the St. Nicholas chapel in Geretsried. The purpose of the association was set to raise funds to restore and maintain the chapel. This was intended to express the connection between the modern and now economically flourishing industrial community of Geretsried with its historical origins and especially with the most venerable building, the landmark of Geretsried.

In two renovations, in 1972 and 1990, the chapel was restored to its original form in accordance with the specifications of the State Office for Monument Protection in Munich.

The chapel is now often used to celebrate weddings, baptisms and other celebrations. On the patronage day of Saint Nicholas, December 6th, a Holy Mass will be celebrated following the general meeting of the interest group.
