Robert Coote

Robert Coote (born February 4, 1909 in London , † November 26, 1982 in New York ) was a British actor .

Life

Robert Coote appeared on the theater stages in England, South Africa and Australia from the age of 16. He made his cinema debut in 1931 in the British film Sally in Our Alley at the side of Gracie Fields . In the late 1930s he came to Hollywood and quickly received his first cinema roles. There he played various supporting roles in many films until the Second World War , specializing in the portrayal of clichéd British, sometimes somewhat stiff characters - often as an aristocrat, military officer or unsuccessful and clumsy admirer of the leading actress. During the war, Coote served in the Canadian Air Force.

After the end of the war, Coote played David Niven's friend, who died in a plane crash, in the British Powell and Pressburger film classic Mistake in the Hereafter . He soon returned to the Hollywood film industry, however, where he played a terrified real estate agent in A Ghost on Free Feet (1947) alongside Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, and Aramis in the adventure film The Three Musketeers (1948) alongside Gene Kelly and Lana Turner played. In 1953 he appeared as Roderigo in Orson Welles ' adaptation of Othello (1952). In 1956 Coote received the role of Colonel Pickering in the first production of the hit musical My Fair Lady on Broadway , this role was one of his greatest successes. He was to play the character again in a revival of My Fair Lady on Broadway towards the end of the 1970s .

From the 1950s, Coote was also seen in various television productions. In 1965 he was nominated for an Emmy for his leading role as Timmy St. Clair in the television series Crooks Against Crooks . His last role in a movie Coote played in 1973 alongside Vincent Price in the horror film Theater des Grauens . However, he remained active in theater and television until shortly before the end of his life, so in 1981 he played in 14 episodes of the crime series Nero Wolfe alongside William Conrad . The unmarried Coote died in his sleep in November 1982 at the age of 73 while staying at the New York Athletic Club .
