In the Secret Service (original title: Cloak and Dagger ) is a black and white film by the director Fritz Lang from 1946 with Gary Cooper and Lilli Palmer in the leading roles. The plot combines an agent story against the historical background of the end of the Second World War with a love story between an American physicist or agent and an Italian resistance fighter . The story is based on the non-fiction book Cloak and Dagger: The Secret Story of OSS

action

Towards the end of the Second World War, the US secret service commissioned the physicist Alvah Jesper ( Gary Cooper ) to find out in Europe how far the research of the Nazis into the construction of atomic bombs had already progressed. Jesper first tries to find a certain professor Polda in Italy to persuade him to work. His daughter, Maria, who was kidnapped by the Nazis, tries to free Jesper with the help of secret resistance fighters, whereby he falls in love with the resistance fighter Gina, which does not necessarily make the task easier to fulfill and creates existential conflicts for both of them.

Reviews

“Adventurous spy drama, roughly constructed, but excitingly staged and well played. However, Lang's handwriting does not distinguish this film. "

" As the hero, Gary Cooper — an old hand at partisan war — gives a good Gary Cooper performance, which is what was expected of him. And Lilli Palmer, a new girl from England, makes almost believable, with a wistful and sensitive personality, the role of the Italian girl. "

“As a hero, Gary Cooper - an old hand in the guerrilla warfare - he is doing a good Gary Cooper performance that does what was expected of him. And Lilli Palmer, a new girl from England, almost believably, with a wistful and sensitive personality, plays the role of the Italian girl "
