Robert Alda , actually Alfonso Giuseppe Giovanni Roberto D'Abruzzo , (born February 26, 1914 in New York City , New York - † May 3, 1986 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Robert Alda was born in New York to parents of Italian origin - Anthony and Frances T. D'Abruzzo. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York in 1930 and began a career as a vaudeville singer and dancer after winning a talent competition. His stage name Alda is made up of the first two letters of his first name and his last name.

He became known in 1945 for the personification of George Gershwin in the biopic Rhapsody in Blue . This was followed by other film appearances, for example in the horror film The Bestie with the Five Fingers (1946) and as a talent agent in Douglas Sirk's melodrama As long as there are people (1959) alongside Lana Turner , but Alda should never develop into the big stars in Hollywood. He celebrated major successes on Broadway , for example in 1950 in Guys and Dolls , for which he received a Tony Award , and in 1964 in What Makes Sammy Run?

Alda moved to Italy in the early 1960s and successfully starred in various European film productions over the next two decades. Occasionally he returned to the United States, where he appeared in the 1969 film The Girl Who Knew Too Much .

His first wife, Joan Brown , a former showgirl and Miss New York, married Alda in 1932; she became the mother of his son, the actor Alan Alda . A few years later the marriage ended in divorce. He remained married to his second wife, Flora Martino, mother of his younger son, Anthony Alda , throughout his life. His son Alan was best known for the TV series M * A * S * H , in which Robert Alda himself also had two guest appearances. His younger son Anthony Alda was also involved in the appearance in the episode Lend A Hand .

Robert Alda died of a heart attack on May 3, 1986, and was 72 years old.
