The city of Delaware is located in the US state Ohio and is the county seat of Delaware County . The borough is located near the center of the state of Ohio, approximately 20 miles north of Columbus . The place is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The population was 25,246 at the 2000 census . According to the 2007 US census estimate, Delaware has a population of 32,986.

history

The first buildings were built in Delaware from 1807, and the place was officially registered as a community in 1815. At that time a court was already established. During the British-American War of 1812, this was the headquarters of the American General William H. Harrison .

The location of the city on the Olentangy River and the proximity to Columbus favored the growth of the place from the beginning. In addition to department stores and restaurants, sawmills and grain mills were built. Around 1840 the place had about two thousand inhabitants. From 1851 a railway line connected Delaware with Columbus and Cleveland . Also due to the associated, further growth of the place, a first local transport system was set up at the beginning of the 20th century, which also offered connections to Columbus and Marion beyond Delaware .

The first university in town, Ohio Wesleyan University , was founded in 1842 by Methodists who originally opened the facility to male students only. From 1877, women who had previously only been able to attend the Ohio Wesleyan Female College , which opened in 1853, were admitted to study . One of the university's students was Rutherford B. Hayes , who would later become President of the United States , who was born in Delaware in 1822.
