The Olentangy River is the largest left tributary of the Scioto River in the US state of Ohio .

Its source is in Crawford County about 3.2 km northeast of the city of Galion. It initially flows west, bends south east of the Bucyrus parish, flows through Delaware Lake, and reaches the Ohio State University campus after about 90 km , before flowing into the Scioto River in downtown Columbus .

The Olentangy River was originally called the Whetstone River, but was renamed in 1833 as a result of a law that introduced the old Indian river names. The word olentangy in the Delaware language means river of red face-paint . The river serves as a drinking water reservoir for the residents of Delaware County . A section of approximately 35 km of the Olentary River has been awarded the title State Scenic River by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and placed under special protection.

On the upper reaches of the Olentangy River, during the Crawford campaign in June 1782, a battle between the Crawford's troops against Indians and British allies took place. Three Americans were killed and eight wounded in the Battle of the Olentangy ; the presumably much higher losses of the Indians and British are unknown.
