Greed for life (Original title: Human Desire ) is an American feature film from 1954 based on a novel by Émile Zola . Directed by Fritz Lang ; the music comes from the Russian-born Daniele Amfitheatrof . The leading roles are the Canadian-born actors Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame .

Jeff Warren returns from the Korean War after several years and works again for the railroad. He falls in love with young Vicky, Buckley's wife, also a railroad worker. When Buckley is dismissed after an argument with his supervisor, he persuades Vicky to talk to the boss Owens, because she knows him from before. In fact, the termination will be withdrawn. But when Buckley finds out that Vicky has slept with Owens, Buckley is enraged. He lures Owens into a trap and kills him while on a train ride. Warren begins a relationship with Vicky; she tries to persuade him to kill her husband. But when he has an opportunity to murder, he does not use it and separates from Vicky. She in turn leaves her husband and takes the train, but is pursued and killed by him.

It is a late film noir produced by Columbia Pictures by Metropolis director Fritz Lang, who used the material from Émile Zola's novel La Bête Humaine to create a story from the 1950s USA. Jean Renoir filmed the content as early as 1938 under the title Bestie Mensch .

In Germany the film was released on November 3, 1954. It was first broadcast on German television on November 17, 1966.

Reviews

  • "The superficial crime story with perfectly heightened tension is condensed by the masterful imagery into a pessimistic parable about the longing for security and a sincere relationship between man and woman," said the lexicon of the international film .
  • Cinema said that the film "certainly does not belong to Lang's masterpieces", but that "the atmospheric, gloomy images and the touchingly playing Gloria Grahame" made the film worth seeing.

Trivia

The imprint 梅 牡 丹 ( Sino-Japanese : bai-botan ) on the dressing gown that Jeff Ellen Simmons brings with him means “peach [and] peony [blossom]”.
