Bestie Mensch (Original title: La Bête Humaine ) is a feature film by Jean Renoir from 1938. It is based on the novel by Émile Zola from 1890, which was published in German under the title Die Bestie im Menschen .

action

Lantier works as a train driver. He is tormented by mental health problems. When he kisses his cousin Flore, he suddenly feels an inner compulsion to kill her. At the last moment he comes to his senses again.

The marriage of Roubaud, stationmaster of Le Havre, and his wife Séverine is not a happy one. Roubaud is jealous, his wife Séverine was previously sexually abused by her uncle Grandmorin. Grandmorin is president of the railway company and is asked for help by Séverine when a passenger complains about Roubaud.

Because of Séverine's "relationship" with Grandmorin, she and her husband quarrel. Roubaud plots Grandmorin's murder and forces Séverine to be there when he stabs Grandmorin to death on a train ride. As they move from its compartment to another, they are noticed by Lantier, who is also on the train as a passenger.

Lantier takes a liking to Séverine himself and is therefore silent during the police investigation. This leads to the arrest of an innocent man named Cabuche. Lantier and Séverine begin a relationship. Séverine tries to get Lantier to kill Roubaud, which Roubaud almost does.

Séverine then separates from Lantier. Some time later, they both meet again at a ball and Séverine tries to persuade him to murder Roubard again. Lantier realizes that there is no future for him in a relationship with Séverine and he kills her if she has another seizure. The next day he jumps off the train at work. His colleague and friend Pecqueux pulls the emergency brake, but can only find Lantier dead.

backgrounds

The shooting took place in France , the locations were in the Seine-Maritime department in the Haute-Normandie region (both exterior shots) and in Gare Saint-Lazare - 13 Rue d'Amsterdam, 8th arrondissement , Paris. The studio recordings came from the Pathé-Cinéma studios in Joinville-le-Pont in the Val-de-Marne department .

“La Bête Humaine confirmed my opinion on poetic realism . In my mind, the steel mass of the locomotive became the magic carpet of oriental fairy tales. For the scenes playing on the locomotive, I only needed to use a single rear projection . Namely in the setting in which Gabin kills himself by throwing himself off the tender while the train is in full swing. "

- Jean Renoir

"Gabin and Carette would never have been so real in front of a back pro, if only because of the noise that forced them to make each other understandable through gestures."

- Jean Renoir

"Overall, Renoir has expertly dramatized and simplified the story according to the rules of cinema, and the result is better than the novel."

- André Bazin

German version

The first German synchronization dates from 1949. A new version was created for ZDF in 1971 with Hansjörg Felmy , Niels Clausnitzer and Rose-Marie Kirstein . The German television first broadcast was on October 25, 1971 at 9 p.m. on ZDF .

criticism

"When filming Zola's naturalistic and socially critical novel, Renoir went his own artistic way by breaking down human tragedy into psychologically motivated impressions, with the fascinating camera work, the masterful editing and outstanding actors at his side."

"Renoir's film is so detailed in its character studies that the viewer soon seems to know more about the characters than they do themselves - until it becomes almost unbearable to watch the characters systematically self-destruct ... An uncomfortable, but at the same time a very Fascinating film that captivates you because all the happenings and all the characters appear realistic through and through - not least because of Gabin's and Simon's great acting achievements. "

“Jean Gabin comes up with a brilliant acting performance; the scenes on the locomotive are among the most impressive passages in the film, which a brilliant ensemble performance and Curt Courant's excellent camera work turn into a full drama full of fascinating everyday observations. "
