The 8th arrondissement of Paris , the Arrondissement de l'Élysée , is one of 20 arrondissements in the French capital, Paris . It was created in the course of the expansion of the city to the west in the mid- 19th century . A large part of Paris' business life is concentrated in this arrondissement , with a correspondingly high number of employees. It is also the most important political center of the capital thanks to the seat of the President, the Ministry of the Interior, numerous embassies and international media offices.

Geographical location

The 8th arrondissement is located directly on the right bank of the Seine . It borders the 9th and 1st arrondissements in the east, the 16th arrondissement in the west and the 17th arrondissement in the north-west and north . The 7th arrondissement is on the opposite bank of the Seine .

Quarter in the 8th arrondissement

The 8th arrondissement consists of the following four districts:

  • Quartier des Champs-Élysées
  • Quartier du Faubourg du Roule
  • Quartier de la Madeleine
  • Quartier de l'Europe

According to the official census of the Parisian districts, these are quarters 29 to 32.

Demographic data

According to the 1999 census, 39,310 inhabitants were registered in the 388 hectare 8th arrondissement. This corresponds to a low population density for Paris of 10 132 inhabitants per km². This means that 1.8% of the Paris population have their main residence in the Arrondissement de l'Élysée.

The population is distributed across the districts as follows:

  • Champs-Elysées: 4,610 inhabitants
  • Faubourg du Roule: 10,000 inhabitants
  • Madeleine: 6,060 inhabitants
  • Europe: 18,640 inhabitants

Politics and administration

The 8th arrondissement is the political center of the city. Here is the Elysée Palace and the Ministry of the Interior. Since 2002 the conservative party Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP; Eng .: Union for a people's movement) has its seat in the 8th arrondissement.

Railway stations and metro lines

In the Quartier de l'Europe is the Gare Saint-Lazare , a terminus station that mainly handles regional traffic to the north-west of the Île-de-France .

Metro lines 1 , 2 , 3 , 8 , 9 , 12 and 13 also run through and along the 8th arrondissement .

The RER line A has only one stop in the 8th arrondissement at the Charles de Gaulle - Étoile station and leads east across the arrondissement. The next stop (Auber) is already in the 1st arrondissement .
