Demographics
According to the 1999 census, 149,102 inhabitants were registered in the 11th arrondissement, which covers 367 hectares, or 6.8% of the Paris population. This results in a population density of 40,627 inhabitants per km². This makes it the most densely populated arrondissement of Paris and at the same time one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The population of the arrondissement is young and has an above-average academic education. This is particularly pronounced along the Canal Saint-Martin , which is regarded as the residential district of Bobos , artists and creative people and a prime example of gentrification , and east of the Place de la Bastille, where one of the centers of Parisian nightlife is. The north-eastern part of the arrondissement beyond the avenue de la République , however, is poorer and the proportion of immigrants, especially from the Maghreb, is above average, but there are also tendencies towards gentrification.
