The 2nd arrondissement of Paris , the Arrondissement de la Bourse , is the smallest arrondissement in the city of Paris with an area of 99 hectares .
history
The 2nd arrondissement is the result of the city's expansion to the north during the 15th and 16th centuries . However, the first buildings were built in the 14th century . At that time, the city wall built by Charles V extended to today's Rue d'Aboukir . Under Louis XIII. The urban area expanded in the 16th century to the northern border of the arrondissement, where the large boulevards run today.
In 1860 the boundaries of the 2nd arrondissement were set.
Geographical location
The 2nd arrondissement is north of the central 1st arrondissement . It is surrounded in the east by the 3rd and in the north by the 9th and 10th arrondissement .

The 2nd arrondissement consists of the following four districts:
- Quartier Gaillon
- Vivienne district
- Quartier du Mail
- Quartier de Bonne-Nouvelle
According to the official census of the Parisian districts, these are quarters 5 to 8.
Demographic data
According to the 1999 census, 19,585 inhabitants were registered in the 2nd arrondissement. This corresponds to a population density of 19,783 inhabitants per km². Thus 0.9% of the Paris population live here.
The population has decreased by 5.3% since 1990.

The Nestor Burma novel Des kilomètres de linceuls (Eng. Fabric for many corpses ) by Léo Malet is set in the 2nd arrondissement.
