Léo Malet
Léo Malet (born March 7, 1909 in Montpellier , Hérault department , † March 3, 1996 in Châtillon-sous-Bagneux , Hauts-de-Seine department ) was a French writer and poet. He wrote a number of detective novels about the Parisian private investigator Nestor Burma .
Life
Malet did an apprenticeship as a bank clerk and went to Paris as an orphan in 1925 . There he was under the care of the editor André Colomer , who replaced his family and also played an important role in his later life. Also André Breton supported Malet. In Paris he was a clochard and, under the influence of the Surrealists, made his way as a chansonnier in the cabaret "Vache Enragée". He then started writing and worked as an office clerk, film statistician, journalist, editor of a fashion magazine and ghostwriter for an illiterate blackmailer. In 1940 he married Paulette Doucet, who had been his companion since 1928; The witnesses were Jacques Prévert and Oscar Dominguez . From 1940 to 1941 he was a prisoner of war in the Stalag XB near Sandbostel .
From 1930 he appeared as a poet in the Groupe Surréaliste . In the 1940s, Malet began to write crime novels, some under the pseudonym "Frank Harding". In addition to his own name, he also drew under Léo Latimer , Lionel Doucet , Jean de Selneuves , Noël Letam , Omer Refreger and Louis Refreger . He used John-Silver Lee as nom de plume together with his friends Serge Arcouët and Thomas Narcejac .
In 1943 his novel 120, Rue de la Gare , was published, the beginning of a series about the Parisian private detective Nestor Burma , on which he wrote for the next 30 years. Was known Nestor Burma by 15 detective novels representing the cycle of the new Mysteries of Paris form. This is a reference to the famous novel The Secrets of Paris by Eugène Sue . Each of these novels is set in a different Parisian arrondissement .
Four days before his 87th birthday, Léo Malet died on March 3, 1996 in Châtillon, where he found his final resting place.
