Arsène Lupine is a fictional character by the French author Maurice Leblanc . The fictional master thief is extremely popular in France and the French-speaking part of Canada .

characterization

Arsène Raoul Lupine is a born gentleman . Born in 1874 to Henriette d'Andrésy and Théophraste Lupine, Lupine enjoyed an excellent education in law and medicine, specializing in dermatology . In addition to Latin , English and Greek , he is fluent in several modern languages. He is a master of the art of disguise and pretending as well as various martial arts and an outspoken art connoisseur and painter - in the hollow rock needle near Étretat he hoards exquisite art treasures, including the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. Lupine knows his genius and it is difficult for him to be humble. The cat and mouse game with the law enforcement officers sometimes seems to be more important to him than personal wealth.

Lupine is adept and posh with women. He hates violence and accordingly only kills in absolute self-defense. Mostly in the novels - as in the real world - he enjoys the sympathy of the general public, since his victims have always come to their wealth in a very questionable way. In the course of time, Lupine rises from the adversary of the authorities to their secret helper - which is certainly also due to the career of its creator.

Compared to Sherlock Holmes (mentioned in Leblanc's books for legal reasons "Herlock Sholmes"), England's famous master detective, Lupine is a certain amount of respect and admiration because it is the only one who drove him more than once cornered. As a true patriot , it is impossible for him to recognize the Victorian system - sometimes he even commits political theft.

Arsène Lupine likes to use pseudonyms for his disguises. Some of them would be:

  • Raoul de Limézy
  • Viscount d'Andrésy
  • Horace Velmont
  • Guillaume Berlat

Emergence

Place of origin of numerous works: the house of Maurice Leblanc in Etretat, today the museum Le Clos Arsène Lupine, Maison Maurice Leblanc

The adventures of Arsène Lupine were described by Maurice Leblanc between 1905 and 1935 in 20 novels, two plays and several short stories. Lupine took his first steps in sequel stories that appeared in the magazine "Je Sais Tout". Leblanc is said to have created the master thief as a counterpart to the very successful Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle - one of Leblanc's novels is called Arsène Lupine versus Herlock Sholmes . According to popular belief, the model for Lupine is the anarchist illegalist Marius Jacob , even if Leblanc always denied this.

Other authors, especially the Boileau-Narcejac collective of authors, of which five novels are available, published stories about the master thief Arsène Lupine.

The novels of the Arsène Lupine series represent an important stage in the history of the detective novel because they change the perspective from the detective to the criminal and introduce the new type of gentleman thief. However, the English writer Ernest William Hornung had already developed his own master burglar AJ Raffles .

Movies

There are numerous film adaptations for cinema and television. The most recent film adaptation ( Arsène Lupine - The King Among the Thieves by Jean-Paul Salomé ) is a French production from 2004. The first Hollywood film with Arsène Lupine was made in 1932, and the first silent film was made in 1910. There are also cartoon and comic series based on stories about Arsène Lupine.
