Maurice Leblanc (born November 11, 1864 in Rouen , † November 6, 1941 in Perpignan ) was a French writer .

Life

Maurice Leblanc was the son of a shipowner. His mother died in 1885. His sister was the singer and actress Georgette Leblanc (1869–1941). Against his father's wishes, he decided to go to Paris to write. At first he worked as a journalist , then as a novelist . He wrote crime and adventure novels , plays and short stories . His most famous fictional character is the master thief Arsène Lupine . Leblanc was possibly inspired by the anarchist Marius Jacob , who committed more than 150 break-ins and was sentenced to 23 years in prison for this. A representation that Maurice Leblanc always denied.

The writer was buried on the Cimetière Montparnasse in Paris. The Villa Leblancs is located in Étretat and now houses the publicly accessible museum Le Clos Arsène Lupine, Maison Maurice Leblanc .

Literary work

In 1905 the first story with Arsène Lupine appeared as a serial novel . The success was so great that Leblanc devoted the rest of his career almost entirely to the master thief. Between 1907 and 1935 he published 20 novels, two plays and several short stories about Arsène Lupine . In 2012 his novel Le dernier amour d'Arsène Lupine, written in 1936 but not yet published, was published : [roman inédit] , Paris: Balland, 2012, ISBN 978-2-35315-152-3 .
