content

The film is set in 1917. Nurse Véronique receives a visit from an officer in the Besançon military hospital, who explains to her that the wolf-eaten corpse of her husband Alexis Vorski has been found. According to the officer, Vorski spied for the Germans. Véronique had hidden from Vorski for 14 years. In a cinema, she discovers her initials V d 'H on the screen at a street attendant 's house . Filled with curiosity, Véronique travels to the location in Brittany .

Véronique's past is revealed in flashbacks: Her father Antoine d'Hergemont was a professor at the Sorbonne . Véronique, surrounded by Philippe Maroux, her father's assistant, is fascinated by Count Alexis Vorski and begins an affair with him. When it turns out that this is a con man, Véronique separates. But Vorski kidnaps Véronique, who is already pregnant. She marries Vorski and is rejected by her father. A year later, Véronique's father kidnaps little François. Véronique learns from a newspaper article that grandfather and grandchildren were killed in a shipwreck. Véronique flees from Vorski.

Arriving at the location, Véronique finds a dead man in the hut, whose right hand has been amputated. Next to the dead man a note with the prophecy “Thirty coffins for thirty victims; Stone of God that gives life or death; four women on the cross ”. Véronique follows clues about an ominous catastrophe that lead them to the coast. There she is recognized by the old Breton Honorine and taken to the island of Sarek, where she is supposed to meet her father and son again. But when she arrives, she hears her father's cries for help and sees a boy who shoots him. Dying, Antoine d'Hergemont curses his grandson François and implores Véronique to leave the island immediately.

With the arrival of Véronique 30 people on the island, the superstitious residents pack their things and want to leave the island. Véronique stays behind to take care of the injured and therefore unfit for transport Honorine. From a rock, Véronique and Honorine watch helplessly as the refugees are shot from a motorboat. Honorine recognizes François in the shooter. She curses Véronique as the “mother of the monster” and falls madly from the cliffs into the sea.

Véronique thinks she is alone on the island, where flowers grow that even as daisies tower over people. More gruesome events follow. So she finds the three sisters Archignat, who have gradually gone mad and shortly afterwards die cruelly to death on the crucifixion. Her only confidante is the little dog Aramis (in the novel Tout-va-bien or Okay ). He leads her into an underground cave, where she hears her son's voice behind a wall. Véronique has to act and faces the danger: she meets her childhood friend Philippe in a torture chamber à la Die Grube und das Pendel , has to witness a fatal duel between two boys and she has to fight against seemingly eerie creatures from the past.

Véronique will meet her archenemy Vorski, the illegitimate son of Ludwig II . This follows a medieval prophecy, according to which Abel should slay his brother Cain in the presence of his mother . In the film, Pascal Sellier is masked in his double role and Claude Jade has to watch the spectacle tied up. Since the mother of Cain is supposed to end on the cross, the bigamist Vorski kills the son from his marriage to his second wife Elfriede. In this respect, the resurrection announced in the medieval prophecy will come true.

The god stone Véronique is looking for is explained by a granite block made of radium below the gigantic flowers.

Remarks

The six-part developed into a street sweeper , which is repeated every year in France. Fans love the goosebumps effects of the mystery thriller. There are numerous forums about the series on the Internet. It was first broadcast in Germany in 1996 as a twelve-part series on ARTE .

While Maurice Leblanc's long-time hero Arsène Lupine appears in the novel to save Véronique and untangle the threads, the film does without his person, who, according to Leblanc, was already "a fly in the soup" in the novel.

The 30-year-old leading actress Claude Jade seemed too young to director Marcel Cravenne . If she appeared with a ponytail at the first casting, she asked for more test shots. With a bun and une voix grave (lower voice) she convinced Cravenne and got the part.
