Harbor City is a borough of Los Angeles , California . Harbor City is part of the 15th district, and has a population of 24,640 (2000). Neighboring communities are Lomita in the west and Torrance in the north . San Pedro in the south is also part of the 15th district, as is Wilmington in the east.

The district has residential areas of the upper middle class, especially on the border with Torrance and Palos Verdes on the one hand, and on the other hand also streets with particularly serious crime and poverty.

Harbor City was originally a part of Rancho San Pedro, the area that the Spanish Empire under Charles III. Juan Jose Domingues was transferred in 1784. This ranch was later partially sold, and after the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, large parts of it were also purchased by American immigrants.

Around 1900 Los Angeles planned to incorporate San Pedro and Wilmington so that the port of the region would also belong directly to the city. When the two cities hesitated, Los Angeles bought a long, narrow stretch of land connecting it to the south with San Pedro Bay and threatened to build its own port there. In this area, the districts Harbor Gateway and Harbor City were established. In 1909, San Pedro and Wilmington agreed to annex, and the new harbor in Harbor City was not built. The name “port city” remains very ironic, as the area is neither a city nor has a port.
