Jacques Tardi (born August 30, 1946 in Valence , Département Drôme ) is a French comic book author.

life and work

Jacques Tardi was born in Valence, but spent his first years in Germany with his father, who was stationed as a soldier in the war-torn Kassel. The father said goodbye to the army in order not to have to go to French Indochina .

After finishing school, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris . In 1970, after several attempts, he published the six-page story “ Un cheval en hiver ” in Pilote magazine . The then well-known Jean Giraud (Moebius) wrote the text of the story .

His first album " Aufruhr in der Rouergue " (scenario: Pierre Christin ) he released after his two years in the military. Already widely noticed, he achieved his final breakthrough in the mid-1970s with his comic series “ Adeles Unusual Adventures ” (ten volumes), in which his enormous attention to detail in the illustration of the urban cityscapes of Paris as well as the technology at the beginning of the 20th century becomes apparent. The time of the Belle Époque inspired him to further works, including the earlier " Demon in the Ice ", a homage to Jules Verne , whose plot he later linked with "Adele".

The First World War , which he first addressed in “ The End of Hope ”, occupies a large part of his work . He later works the album as the fifth volume in the series “ Adeles Unusual Adventures ” and brings the respective protagonists together in the sixth volume. In what is probably the most demanding work, “ Trench Warfare”, he processes authentic war experiences of his traumatized grandfather and numerous other reports into a collage of the horrors of war. The extensive literature and film list he worked through on the last page of the book is comprehensive and in no way omits works that describe the opposing, i.e. German, point of view.

In addition, are " Soldier Varlot ," a character he previously in his crime novel adaptations " The Last bite the dogs had used" and " The True Story of the Unknown Soldier " evidence of the intensive study of the subject. The plot of “ The last ones bite the dogs ” takes place after the First World War, but the fate of all protagonists is closely linked to it and its lasting effects. In the two-volume work “ Elender Krieg ” he deepened the topic again in chronological form.

After the comics about the First World War, Tardi's work about his father in the Second World War will be published in 2012 , which Andreas Platthaus placed in the FAZ comic blog as the second best comic of the year and in 2013 under the title “ Ich, René Tardi, prisoner of war in Stalag II B “Was published in German. A second volume, “ The Long March Through Germany ”, about returning to France, followed shortly thereafter.

Another main direction of his work are the adaptations of crime stories against a historical backdrop. In particular, the collaboration with the author and surrealist Léo Malet was very fruitful and resulted in a congenial combination of two alleged “trivial media”. In “ The Bridge in the Fog ” he draws the first story based on one of the novels about the cynical private detective Nestor Burma .

The two-volume comic novel " 120, Rue de la Gare " at the time of the German occupation during World War II combines a captivating crime story with a detailed visualization of time. Due to the great success of this masterpiece, further adaptations of Malet's stories with Nestor Burma (“ No ticket for death ”, “ How does death stand?” ) Followed , as well as a story with Malet's characters developed by Tardi himself (“ Blei in the bones ").

Further adaptations of crime stories to novels follow: " The Cockroach Killer " (scenario by Benjamin Legrand ), " The Sniffer " (scenario by Jean-Patrick Manchette ), " Deadly Games " (based on the novel by Géo-Charles Véran ).

The comic novel “ Here Itself ”, a collaboration with Jean-Claude Forest , has over a hundred pages and was created in the tradition of serial novels. The story had to be continued by the authors at regular intervals and in many cases they only managed to finish work on an episode immediately before the respective deadline. The further action did not follow a previously defined concept, but developed from one part to the next.

After a socially critical work on unemployment (" Down "), the only one with a clear reference to the present, Tardi turned back to a historical topic, the events of the Paris Commune of 1871. The critically acclaimed graphic novel " The Power of the People " a novel by Jean Vautrin appeared in four volumes.
