Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême
The Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême (translated “International Comics Festival of Angoulême”) has been held annually since 1974 in Angoulême , France . It is considered to be the most important comic festival in Europe. Around 200,000 visitors come to the festival in Angoulême every year for four days in January.
At the end of 1972 the Dix millions d'images exhibition took place in the city. As this was a success, it was decided to organize several such exhibitions and finally a festival. On January 25, 1974, the first edition of the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême opened . In the following years the festival was expanded and well-known comic artists such as Hergé , Will Eisner and Moebius attended the event. The increasing popularity of the festival made Angoulême France's “City of Comics”.
A jury has been awarding comic artists awards in various categories since 1974. The first winners included Christian Godard , Víctor de la Fuente and Roy Thomas . These awards were initially called Alph-art , but this name has not been used since 2005. The Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême is awarded to comic artists for their life's work or for their outstanding importance in the historical development of comics.
