Cosey (born as Bernard Cosandey ) (born June 14, 1950 in Lausanne , Vaud, Switzerland) is a Swiss comic artist who has received numerous international awards and prizes. He lives in Pully , Switzerland.

life and work

After completing an apprenticeship as a graphic artist from 1965 to 1969, Cosey was an assistant at Derib from 1970 and colored various albums for him. From 1970 he published Monfreyd et Tilbury (scenario by André-Paul Duchâteau ) his first humorous comics for the Belgian newspaper Le soir . He started his multi-volume adventure series Jonathan in 1975. The comic character Jonathan is a European dropout who travels the Himalayas , especially Tibet . She has autobiographical traits: "I am the shadow of Jonathan, his darker, less brilliant side." In this series he combines his excellent drawing skills with literary material. After an 11 year hiatus, Cosey published albums from this series again in 1997 and 2001.

Since 1985, Cosey has mainly been drawing individual comic novels with changing main characters. What they have in common is that they embark on external and internal journeys. The story In Search of Peter Pan , published in two albums, is set in a small village in the Valais Alps at the end of the 1920s . A Trip to Italy is about two Vietnam War veterans who travel around Italy and the US and are caught up in their past. Orchidea is a typical road comic in which three siblings drive on American highways in search of their father. In Saigon - Hanoi , Cosey even foregoes any action in a formally innovative scenario: on New Year's Eve, a Vietnam veteran again speaks to a little girl he does not know on the phone while watching a television film about Vietnam. In Joyeux Nöel, May , Cosey tells a Christmas story about two different women who meet in the Rocky Mountains . Zeke raconte des histoires is an experimental comic whose main story is interrupted by many small side stories. In 2003 published Une maison de Frank L. Wright four love stories with happy endings are combined in one album.

In addition, Cosey has published countless other stories, illustrations , series graphics and various other works.

Awards

Cosey received numerous awards and prizes in France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1988 he received the Max and Moritz Prize for the best German-language comic book publication ( In Search of Peter Pan ), and in 1993 the prize for the best scenario ( Saigon - Hanoi ) at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême .
