Joann Sfar (born August 28, 1971 in Nice ) is a French comic book writer , film director and screenwriter .

life and work

Joann Sfar studied philosophy at the University of Nice, where he obtained a master’s degree before studying art at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . He works with other comic artists such as Tronchet and Emmanuel Guibert in a joint studio and is a draftsman and comic szenarist in a variety of series for children and adult audiences.

In The Rabbi's Cat , Sfar, himself a Jew, addresses Judaism in the Maghreb . He describes himself as not religious. For him, Judaism is primarily culture, not religion. As a draftsman, Sfar is valued because of his almost sketchy, nervous, virtuoso stroke.

At the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême he was awarded the Prix René Goscinny for the album La Fille du professeur in 1998. Also in Angoulême, he won the Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angoulême in 2002 for his life's work . In 2001 he received the Prix ​​international de la Ville de Genève pour la bande dessinée for L'Académie des Beaux-Arts (first volume in the series Le Minuscule Mousquetaire ).

In 2010 he made his feature film debut as a director and screenwriter with Gainsbourg - The Man Who Loved Women ( Gainsbourg - vie héroïque ). In 2015, Sfar's film La Dame dans l'auto avec des lunettes et un fusil ( The Lady in the Car with Sunglasses and Gun ), based on the novel of the same name by Sébastien Japrisot, followed .
