The film prizes awarded by the French Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma were awarded in 22 categories. American actress Jodie Foster took over the presidency of the gala, which changes annually in 2011 . After Marcello Mastroianni ( 1993 ), the office was again a non-French. As host ( maître de cérémonie ) Antoine de Caunes led through the evening . The French actor has hosted the event six times in the past.

The award ceremony was broadcast live on the French television channel Canal + . The American director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino received the annual honorary award . Homages were dedicated to Claude Chabrol , who died in 2010, who never received the César despite four nominations, as well as to the late actor Bernard Giraudeau and the imprisoned Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi . The guests included the American actress Olivia de Havilland , the French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand and the former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin . The latter had made a brief guest appearance in the nominated comedy The Name of the People .

Favorite films

The nominations were announced on January 21, 2011 in the Parisian restaurant Le Fouquet’s on the Champs-Élysées . 2010 was the most successful year for French film in over 40 years with over 206 million admissions and a market share of 35 percent, according to Alain Terzian , President of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma , which awards the Césars.

The favorite for France's national film award was Xavier Beauvois ' Von Menschen und Göttern . The drama starring Lambert Wilson , Michael Lonsdale , Philippe Laudenbach and Jacques Herlin was able to translate three of its eleven nominations into victories and won the awards for best French film of the year, for best supporting actor (Michael Lonsdale) and best camera. It tells the story of the fate of several Cistercian monks who oppose the fundamentalist terror in Algeria and pay with their lives for it. The film, which is based on a true story , won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 and the French Prix Lumières in 2011 . In addition to the critical praise received, Von Menschen und Göttern was also considered commercially successful with more than 3.2 million visitors in France, but was not shortlisted as France's candidate for the 2011 Oscar.

Roman Polański's The Ghostwriter and Joann Sfars Gainsbourg - The Man Who Loved Women, each with eight nominations, were also among the extended circle of favorites . Polański's English-language film focuses on a ghostwriter (played by Ewan McGregor ) who revises the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister ( Pierce Brosnan ) and comes across inconsistencies. The European co-production, based on the novel of the same name by Robert Harris , won the Director's Prize and the European Film Prize at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival in 2010 . At the César Awards, The Ghostwriter became the most successful film of the evening with four prizes. Polański received the directing award for the third time after 1980 ( Tess ) and 2003 ( The Pianist ), more often than any other filmmaker. There were also awards for the best adapted screenplay, film music and editing. In his feature film debut, Sfar dedicated himself to the biography of the artist, musician and bon vivant Serge Gainsbourg , who triumphed in the categories of best debut film and editing. Éric Elmosnino won the César for best leading actor for the title role. The field in the Best Film category was won by the Comedy Tour (Director's Prize in Cannes, 6 nominations, no win), The Order Over (5 nominations, no win), The Name of the People (4 nominations, two successes) and the drama Mammuth ( 3 nominations, no win) added. Despite seven nominations, Bertrand Tavernier's historical film The Princess of Montpensier was denied a nomination in this category. The director filmed the novel of the same name by Madame de Lafayette with Mélanie Thierry in the title role and won for the best costumes. In addition to the eventual winner Polański, Beauvois and Bertrand Blier, Mathieu Amalric ( Tournée ) and Olivier Assayas ( Carlos - The Jackal ) were also considered for the director's award .

Gérard Depardieu had received his 16th César nomination for his leading role as Mammoth . But he had to admit defeat together with Romain Duris ( The Order Lover ), Jacques Gamblin ( The Name of the People ) and Lambert Wilson ( Of Men and Gods ) Éric Elmosnino ( Gainsbourg - The Man Who Loved Women ). In the Best Actress category , Catherine Deneuve was considered for the tenth time for her title role in François Ozone's comedy Das Schmuckstück . Together with Isabelle Carré ( Les Émotifs anonymes ), Charlotte Gainsbourg ( The Tree ) and the British Prix Lumière winner Kristin Scott Thomas ( Elle s'appelait Sarah ), she met Sara Forestier ( The Name of the People ), who was awarded. In Michel Leclerc's comedy, which won another screenplay award, Forestier plays a political activist who is passionate about fighting for marginalized groups. At the same time, the young and attractive woman sleeps with politically right-wing men in order to turn them around ideologically.

In advance of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma, which has over 4,000 members , Guillaume Canet's tragic comedy Little True Lies had hardly been considered . The film about a group of friends (played by François Cluzet , Marion Cotillard and Benoît Magimel , among others ) who decide to spend a holiday at the sea after a harrowing event, received two nominations for the two supporting actors Valérie Bonneton and Gilles Lellouche , stayed but not awarded. In France, the production had over 5.2 million admissions, making it the most successful French film. The daily newspaper Le Figaro noticed few surprises among the nominated films and artists and - like the Libération online service - pointed out the lack of Fabien Onteniente's comedy Camping 2 , which attracted 3.9 million viewers to the cinemas. Been ignored were Raúl Ruiz 'international co-production Mysteries of Lisbon that the 2010 Louis Delluc Prize won, and Abbas Kiarostami's love film Copie conforme , for lead actress Juliette Binoche Actor Award received in Cannes of 2010. Ajourd'hui en France had noticed that comedies were nonetheless well represented and referred to the productions The order lover , Tout ce qui brille and the nominations of the actresses Deneuve, Carré and Forestier.

A new category was introduced for the best animated film , in which the Oscar- winning short film Logorama on Luc Besson's Arthur et la Guerre des deux mondes , L'Homme à la Gordini by Jean-Christophe Lie, Jean-Loup Feliciolis Une vie de chat and met the eventual winner - the Golden Globe and Oscar- nominated contribution L'Illusioniste by Sylvain Chomet . For the first time, a technology prize (“Trophée César & Techniques”) was awarded separately. At the award ceremony on January 10, 2011, the award went to Archipel Production , which had been involved in editing Pierre Salvadoris De vrais mensonges and Copie conforme . A film ("Révélations 2011") about the 32 pre-selected young actors (16 women and 16 men each) was presented by the US director Zoe Cassavetes on January 17, 2011 in Paris, with well-known artists such as Nicole Garcia , Lou Doillon , Emmanuelle Devos or Cédric Klapisch took over sponsorships.

In the Best Foreign Film category , the award-winning or nominated entries Bright Star (New Zealand), In Her Eyes (Argentina) and Invictus - Unconquered (USA) received nominations at the 2010 Academy Awards . In addition to Les Amours imaginaires (Canada) and Illégal (Belgium), Inception and The Social Network ( Golden Globe Award 2011 ), the favorite entries for the 2011 Academy Awards, were nominated. The Social Network won the award.

The production designer Albrecht Konrad ( The Ghostwriter ) was the only German artist to receive a nomination.
