Juan José Campanella (born July 19, 1959 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine film director and screenwriter .

Life

In 1979 and 1980 he studied film in the group of professional filmmakers and at the Universidad de Avellaneda . He gained his first experience as a director in 1979 with the 22-minute short film Prioridad nacional . His 1982 90-minute documentary Victoria 392 was not marketed. Campanella moved to New York University in 1983 , where he completed his film and television studies in 1988. His graduation film El contorsionista was honored as the best science fiction film at the university festival , and he himself received the award for best director. Before Campanella left for the United States, he had produced the comedy Off-Corrientes and co-wrote the script for the television film Fuera de broma .

This was followed by Hell, Mrs. Love! (1991) about a twelve year old who made his mother's life hell. Based on a story by Catherine May Levin , the film was shown at several international film festivals. At the Valladolid International Film Festival , Haley Cross was named Best Actor for his portrayal of twelve year old Dan Love . From 1992 Campanella directed several episodes of various television series, including four episodes of the series Lifestories: Families in Crisis . His television work also includes Ed - The Bowling Lawyer , Strangers with Candy , Upright Citizens Brigade, and Remember WENN . From 2000 he also directed several episodes of the well-known crime series Law & Order: New York and Criminal Intent - crime in sight .

Based on a story by José Pablo Feinmann , Campanella wrote the screenplay for the feature film Love Walked In , which was released in US cinemas in February 1998 - as well as To Hell, Mrs. Love! a US production. Denis Leary and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón played the leading roles in the thriller, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival . Campanella's next film, El mismo amor, la misma lluvia , was shot in Buenos Aires. The critically acclaimed work won multiple awards at festivals and was the big winner of the Argentinean Film Critics Association Awards in 2000 . In Spain he was with a grossing of approx. 2.8 million euros also a commercial success.

The following film, The Bride's Son , was also shot in Argentina. It was shown in theaters in Argentina on August 16, 2001, and later in cinemas in numerous countries, and became Campanella's greatest success. The drama, starring Ricardo Darín , Héctor Alterio and Norma Aleandro, grossed over 7 million euros in Spain and won many awards at film festivals, including the World Film Festival and the Valladolid International Film Festival . At the Academy Awards 2002 , the film was also nominated in the category Best Foreign Language Film , but it had to admit defeat to the anti-war film No Man's Land by the Bosnian director Danis Tanović .

Ricardo Darín also starred in Campanella's 2004 film Luna de Avellaneda . The film was u. a. nominated for one Goya and fourteen Argentinean Film Critics Association Awards. In 2009 Darín took the lead again in Campanellas In Her Eyes . The crime drama won an Oscar in 2010 in the category of best foreign language film .
