Danis Tanović (2008)

Danis Tanović (born  February 20, 1969 in Zenica , Yugoslavia , now Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a Bosnian film director , film producer and politician. His war drama No Man's Land won an Oscar in 2002 for best foreign language film. Together with Emir Kusturica , he is one of the most famous contemporary directors in the former Yugoslavia.

biography

After graduating from school, he decided to study civil engineering , which he successfully completed. Afterwards "he studied piano at the theater and art academy and also attended the Sarajevo Film Academy". This training was interrupted by the Bosnian War. During the war years he was responsible for the film archive of the Bosnian army and worked there as a cameraman for documentaries. In 1994 he went to Belgium , where he continued his studies at the INSAS film school - Institut Supérieur des Arts in Brussels . He also took Belgian citizenship in 1998 and now lives and works in Sarajevo .

In 2001 he received a Palme d'Or in Cannes for the screenplay of his debut No Man's Land ; a year later, the film was awarded an Oscar and a Golden Globe , both for best foreign language film. In addition to the script and production, Tanović was also responsible for the film music.

In 2002 he contributed an episode to the film 11'09 "01 - September 11 , in which filmmakers from all over the world presented their views on the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA .

In 2003 Tanović was a member of the jury for the Cannes Golden Palm .

In April 2008 he was one of the founders of the Naša stranka party . Tanović is one of its three vice-presidents. Since 2010 he has been a member of the parliament of the canton of Sarajevo .

His film From the Life of a Scrap Collector premiered at the 63rd Berlinale , where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Silver Bear for best actor .

In 2016 Tanović received the Grand Jury Prize in the competition of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival for his feature film Smrt u Sarajevu (Death in Sarajevo) with Jacques Weber . As a producer, he was involved in Die Flügel der Menschen in 2017 and in Vater - Otac in 2020 .
