The 2002 Academy Awards took place for the first time on March 24, 2002 at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles and on a Sunday. It was the 74th Annual Academy Awards . In the year of the award, films from the previous year are always recognized, in this case the films from 2001.

The 74th Academy Awards were all about African Americans , because for the first time in the history of the Academy Awards, African Americans won both awards for best leading actor: Denzel Washington was honored for Training Day , Halle Berry for Monster's Ball .

The winning film of the evening was A Beautiful Mind - Genie und Wahnsinn , which won four major Academy Awards in the categories of Best Picture , Best Director ( Ron Howard ), Best Supporting Actress ( Jennifer Connelly ) and Best Adapted Screenplay ( Akiva Goldsman ).

The first part of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Companions , also received four Oscars , which won the trophy in the categories of Best Music ( Howard Shore ), Best Cinematography , Best Mask and Best Special Effects.

In addition, Black Hawk Down and Moulin Rouge each won two Oscars in the categories of cut and sound and set and costumes.

The Best Supporting Actor Award went to Jim Broadbent for portraying in Iris , and the Best Original Screenplay Award went to Julian Fellowes for the Gosford Park script .
