The 1986 Academy Awards took place on March 24, 1986 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles . It was the 58th Annual Academy Awards . In the year of the award, films from the previous year are always recognized, in this case the films from 1985.

At the 58th Academy Awards, the film Out of Africa won seven Academy Awards. Including the prizes for Best Film , Best Director ( Sydney Pollack ) and Best Adapted Screenplay ( Kurt Luedtke ) (also camera, music, production design and sound).
The film Cocoon won two Academy Awards , including Best Supporting Actor ( Don Ameche ) (also special effects) and the film The Only Witness , which received the award for Best Editing and the award for Best Original Screenplay .
The other acting awards went to William Hurt in the Spider Woman's Kiss in the Best Actor category and to Anjelica Huston in The Prizzis' Honor in the Best Supporting Actress category . Geraldine Page ( A Trip to Bountiful ) received a two-minute standing ovation from the audience as the winner in the Best Actress category .

Twelve people were nominated for the soundtrack of The Color Purple . That was the most people who were ever nominated for a single Oscar. The prize went to the soundtrack of Out of Africa . In spite of 11 nominations, the film was unable to win any other awards and is therefore on the list of Most Nominations / No Awards together with At the turning point , which the same thing happened in 1978.

During the show, actress Sarah Cunningham , the wife of actor John Randolph, had an asthma attack in the lobby and passed away.
