Live and act
Early years
Jonathan Cryer was born in 1965 to Broadway actors and singers Donald David and Gretchen Cryer. At the age of 12, he decided to pursue an acting career himself. While still in school, Cryer attended acting classes at the Stagedoor Manor theater camp during the holidays . In 1983 he graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and began studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London the following year .
Career
In 1984, Jon Cryer played his first role as a protagonist in Jerry Schatzberg's movie A strong number on the side of Demi Moore . In the following years he mainly appeared in comedies and brat pack films such as "Duckie" Dale in Pretty in Pink (1986), which he was able to further increase his popularity. Cryer also starred in Dudes in 1987 - Hold Me, The Desert Shakes! and in Superman IV - The World on the Edge as an opponent of Christopher Reeve . The slapstick -Fliegerfilm Hot Shots! - The 1991 mother of all films first brought him to the cinema with Charlie Sheen and Ryan Stiles .
In the 1990s, Cryer played leading roles in various sitcoms such as The Famous Teddy Z , Getting Personal or The Trouble with Normal , which were all set relatively early because of their low success. He also appeared in the theater in London. An application for a leading role, later taken on by Matthew Perry , in the successful television series Friends failed because the casting video sent by post arrived too late at its destination. For the films The Thing with Women (1986) and Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God…. Be back at five (1998) he was the main actor and screenwriter.
Cryer's breakthrough as a television actor came in 2003 with the sitcom Two and a Half Men , for which he again starred with Charlie Sheen and Ryan Stiles, but also with Ashton Kutcher and Angus T. Jones . The role of the clumsy Alan Jerome Harper earned him three Emmy nominations in a row from 2006 to 2008 . At the award ceremony in 2009 he was then able to win the Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy series. With earnings of $ 550,000 per episode, Cryer was also one of the highest-paid comedy stars on US television. The series ended in February 2015 after 262 episodes. On September 19, 2011, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the television category . It is the 2449th badge in total.
In 2011 he played a role in the Musical Company on Broadway alongside Neil Patrick Harris .
Private life
From 1999 to 2004 Jon Cryer was married to the British actress Sarah Trigger; both have a son who was born in 2000. In June 2007, Cryer married journalist and television presenter Lisa Joyner, with whom he adopted a daughter in 2009.
