Lady Dynamite is an American sitcom directed by Mitch Hurwitz and Pam Brady with Maria Bamford in the lead role. The series is inspired by Bamford's biographical experiences with mental disorders and her life as a comedian and voice actress in Hollywood . The first season was released on Netflix on May 20, 2016 . A second season has been announced for 2017.
action
Comedian and actress Maria Bamford (played by Maria Bamford ) is moving back to Los Angeles after six months of psychiatric treatment for her bipolar disorder . Here she wants to build on her career with the help of her incompetent manager Bruce (played by Fred Melamed ) and rebuild her life. The series is three chapters intertwined with flashbacks about Bamford's success in LA before her mental breakdown, her experiences during therapy in her hometown of Duluth, and her personal and professional fresh start after treatment. The non-linear narrative style of the series is characterized by surreal metahumor and the regular breaking through of the fourth wall .
characters
main characters
Maria Bamford ( Maria Bamford ) is in her forties and has enjoyed moderate success as a comedian, actress and voice actress. Just as her career begins to take off, she suffers a mental breakdown and is diagnosed with bipolar disorder II . She moves back to her parents in her hometown Duluth and receives outpatient therapy here. After her therapy she moves back to LA and tries to reorganize her professional and private life without falling back into her old self-destructive behavior.
Bruce Ben-Bacharach ( Fred Melamed ) is Maria's well-meaning but incompetent manager.
Marilyn Bamford ( Mary Kay Place ), Maria's caring but always sober, matter-of-fact mother, takes care of her sick daughter when she moves back to her parents' house due to therapy.
Minor characters
Karen Grisham ( Ana Gasteyer ) is Maria's self-confident aggressive agent. She bears the same name as Maria's real estate agent (played by June Diane Raphael ) and her life coach (played by Jenny Slate ). In the context of the series, the three Karen Grishams, with their exaggerated character traits, represent a manifestation of Maria's manic tendencies.
Larissa ( Lennon Parham ) is Maria's often self-centered and opportunistic friend and becomes her assistant when she returns to LA.
Dagmar ( Bridget Everett ) is Maria's best friend with Larissa.
Joel Bamford ( Ed Begley Jr. ), Maria's father.

production
In 2013 Bamford took on a guest role in the fourth season of the Hurwitz-produced series Arrested Development . Hurwitz, who had closed a production deal with Netflix, then asked Bamford if they had an idea for a series. Bamford then proposed a comedy series about a mental breakdown. Pam Brady , who previously worked on South Park and Team America: World Police , joined as a screenwriter and producer on Hurwitz's recommendation. The series was shot in Minnesota and Los Angeles.
