Fred Melamed (born May 13, 1956 in New York City ) is an American actor .

Life

Melamed is the adopted son of television producer Louis Melamed . His biological mother, whom he met when he was 27, is actress Nancy Zala . His biological father, whom he only met when he was over 50, is British psychoanalyst Stan Silverstone. His adoptive family was Jewish , but not religious. According to his own account, he only visited a synagogue once , for a cousin's bar mitzvah .

Melamed lives in Long Island with his wife and two children, both of whom have autism .

Career

Melamed attended Hampshire College , where he discovered his passion for acting. For this reason, he decided to do an acting education at the Yale Drama School . His voice in particular gained notoriety in the period that followed, as he spoke numerous commercials , among other things . He had his first TV role in 1981 in the series Love, Lies, Passion . His first role in a motion picture was in Lovesick in 1983. This was followed by numerous roles in Woody Allen films , including Hannah and Her Sisters , Radio Days , Another Woman, and Shadows and Fog . But he celebrated his greatest success with the role of Sy Ableman in the Oscar-nominated film A Serious Man by Ethan and Joel Coen . Last but not least, Ethan Coen himself described Sy Ableman as his favorite character from all of his films.
