action

In the town of Bulwark, recently paroled Henry returns home and interrupts his mother with a client. After Henry severely berated her for working as a prostitute, he turns to his younger brother Ethan.

Three weeks later, police officers Brett Ridgeman and Anthony Lurasetti raided the home of Vasquez, a well-known drug dealer. Ridgeman is needlessly rude with the suspect and forces his girlfriend to reveal a duffel bag of money and narcotics. The investigation is a success, but the detectives are brought before their supervisor, Chief Lt. Calvert, ordered to his office. Calvert informs her that a video showing Ridgeman suppressing Vasquez has been released for the media. He is therefore forced to suspend both detectives for six weeks without pay.

Ridgeman's daughter Sara is constantly harassed, and his wife, Melanie, a former police officer with multiple sclerosis , begs him to move her to a safer neighborhood. Lurasetti is also desperate for money and plans to propose to his girlfriend Denise. On a tip from Friedrich, a wealthy businessman with criminal connections, Ridgeman recruits Lurasetti to help him monitor and rob the mysterious Lorentz Vogelmann. After Lurasetti bought an engagement ring, Lurasetti withholds the application and is unsure whether he can participate in Ridgeman's plan.

Henry and his childhood friend, Biscuit, are hired by Vogelmann, whose masked coworkers - one in black gloves, one in gray - have committed a series of robberies to purchase a custom-made bulletproof van with airless tires. Bank teller Kelly Summer struggles to abandon her newborn son, but returns to work for the first time after her maternity leave. Vogelmann, Black Gloves and Gray Gloves raid the bank while Biscuit and Henry wait in the van disguised as security guards. With methodical instructions recorded on tape, Vogelmann demands the return of gold bars. Kelly, fearing for her life, tries to prevent a colleague from notifying the police and is executed.

Ridgeman and Lurasetti shadow the van and discover that Vogelmann is robbing the bank. The thieves escape with the bullion and a hostage, Cheryl, after neutering the bank manager. Unsettled by the brutality of the bank robbers, Biscuit and Henry are forced to surrender their weapons. Realizing that they might be killed, Henry distracts Biscuit with memories of their childhood and decides not to reveal that they are being followed by the detectives.

Lurasetti learns that five people were killed in the robbery and that the thieves have taken a hostage. He berates Ridgeman for not intervening earlier or notifying the authorities, but Ridgeman claims that the prosecution is too late anyway and only they can settle the accounts with the thieves. Lurasetti leaves Denise a voicemail and leads her to the engagement ring.

When Biscuit arrives at a garage, he jumps out of the van and is shot dead when Henry Gray wounds Gloves with a hidden gun. Biscuit is fatally wounded and swallows the key of the van. He begs Henry to take care of his mother and is shot. Ridgeman and Lurasetti arrive wearing body armor and ballistic masks. Cheryl is forced to drag Biscuit's body into the van, while Lusaretti, an Army rifleman, cannot disable the van with his sniper rifle. Black Gloves cuts the key out of Biscuit's stomach, but Ridgeman rams the van and knocks it over.

Threatened by Vogelmann, the half-naked Cheryl crawls to the detectives and shoots Lurasetti. She is shot by Ridgeman, who kills Black Gloves as he leaves the van. Lurasetti overhears a voicemail from Denise who denies his request and dies. Ridgeman fills the van with tear gas and kills Gray Gloves when he surrenders. After killing Vogelmann too, Ridgeman is ambushed by Henry, who recorded the entire incident on his cell phone. Ridgeman disarms Henry and suggests that they split up the booty and collectively load the corpses and gold into the getaway car.

Henry drags Lurasetti's car off the scene and finds another hidden weapon. Ridgeman holds Henry at gunpoint and tells him to delete the video, but Henry shoots him. After Henry promised the dying Ridgeman that his family would be looked after, he buried all of the bodies.

Eleven months later, Henry lives with his mother and brother in a spacious villa. He sends Melanie and Sara a package addressed to them by Ridgeman containing some of the gold bars.

reception

Dragged Across Concrete achieved a positive rating of 75% from 140 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes . On Metacritic , the film received a score of 60 based on 28 reviews. In the IMDb , the film was rated with an average of 7.0 out of 10 points.

"A dramaturgically extremely expansive thriller with violent peaks, which first epically introduces the main characters and also the history of unimportant secondary characters, and then ends in an atmospherically staged, brutal showdown."

"With" Dragged Across Concrete ", S. Craig Zahler delivers the next masterpiece of neo-exploitation after" Bone Tomahawk "and" Brawl in Cell Block 99 ". In his new film, Zahler once again negotiates the fragile meaning of ancient models of masculinity and uses the fate of two suspended police officers to negotiate Mel Gibson's person on the meta-level. The result is a highly intense, pulpy, haunting and surprisingly complex viewing experience, which leads the viewer and the actors straight into the all-decomposing darkness. "
