30 Rock is an American sitcom that aired October 11, 2006 through January 31, 2013 on NBC . The concept comes from Tina Fey , who also plays the lead role. In Germany, the pay TV channel TNT is showing Series 30 Rock as a German premiere. The premiere in German free TV was on November 4, 2009 on the ZDF digital channel ZDFneo . In Switzerland, SF Zwei broadcasts the series in two-channel sound. In Austria, the series started on September 14, 2010 on pulse 4 , which broadcasts double episodes every Tuesday.

content

Entrance from 30 rock

The series takes place behind the scenes of the fictional NBC variety show The Girlie Show , which is roughly equivalent in structure to Saturday Night Live . This program is produced in the Comcast Building (30 Rockefeller Plaza), from which the name 30 Rock is derived.

The team of authors is led by Liz Lemon, a single woman in her mid-thirties. Her new boss, Jack Donaghy, tries to influence the program and hires, among other things, the extroverted film star Tracy Jordan, who becomes the new main character of the show, which is now called TGS with Tracy Jordan .

background

Tina Fey herself worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live for many years and was its first chief writer. 30 Rock is based in part on her experiences from that time.

Numerous guest stars appear in the series, including NBC colleagues such as Conan O'Brien , Chris Matthews , Tucker Carlson , Jimmy Fallon , Al Roker and Rachel Dratch . Other guests included Ghostface Killah , LL Cool J , Talib Kweli , Whoopi Goldberg , Jerry Seinfeld , John McEnroe , David Schwimmer , Carrie Fisher , Jennifer Aniston , Salma Hayek , James Franco , Steve Martin , Steve Buscemi , Adam West , Elizabeth Banks , Matt Damon and Bryan Cranston .

particularities

30 Rock is a single camera sitcom. The plot is very fast-paced and implemented with an abundance of content and visual details that were previously not common in this form in comedy series. Completely incidental, independent sub-acts are constantly interspersed in the actual plot.

By naming the actual company and personal names (for example NBC , GE , Brian Williams , Condoleezza Rice ), the series succeeds in building a pseudo-documentary reference into the fictional plot. This real satirical character is all the more reinforced when people appear as themselves (e.g. Conan O'Brien , Jerry Seinfeld , Al Gore , Larry King , Oprah Winfrey , Whoopi Goldberg or Buzz Aldrin ).

occupation

main characters

Elizabeth "Liz" Lemon
Liz ( Tina Fey ) is the lead author of "TGS with Tracy Jordan". At the beginning of the series, she is in her mid-thirties and is not in a committed relationship. She has had problems building a relationship for a long time.
Tracy Jordan
Tracy is the main character of "TGS with Tracy Jordan". The role is based in an exaggerated form on the life of its actor Tracy Morgan . Tracy is often cranky and rarely manages to obey the rules. He is married and has two sons and a daughter.
Jenna Maroney
Jenna ( Jane Krakowski ) co-stars with TGS and is Liz's best friend. Again and again she feels treated unfairly compared to Tracy and claims that Liz is primarily concerned with his needs and neglects them.
Kenneth Parcell
Kenneth ( Jack McBrayer ) is a Page in the GE Building. He loves his job and does all the tasks immediately, no matter how important they are. Kenneth is sometimes naive and likes to get upset about the misdeeds of his colleagues.
Pete Hornberger
Pete ( Scott Adsit ) is the producer on TGS. When Liz has a crazy idea in her head, it is usually he who tries to dissuade her. In the second season he lives with Liz.
Frank Rossitano
Frank ( Judah Friedlander ) is a member of the TGS writing team. His special trademark are his constantly changing baseball caps with funny sayings.
Jack Donaghy
Jack ( Alec Baldwin ) is Liz's manager. Despite initial difficulties, they make friends quickly, and it is usually Jack who first hears about Liz's problems. Jack has his own way of dealing with people and is often uncomfortably honest.
Cerie Xerox
Cerie ( Katrina Bowden ) is Liz's assistant. She is still very young and often attracts the attention of men. Cerie gets engaged to Aris in the first season , but the viewer never gets to see him. They get married at the end of the fourth season. Many gags come from the fact that Cerie indirectly insults Liz through her statements about older people.
James "Toofer" Spurlock
Toofer ( Keith Powell ) is another member of the writing team. He is friends with Frank. Because he's black, he gets along badly with Tracy, especially in the first season, because he believes that Tracy would cast the image of the black in a bad light.
Josh Girard
Josh ( Lonny Ross ) is another writer and co-star. Josh is not particularly intelligent and often acts like a child.
JD Lutz
Lutz ( John Lutz ) is another author. He is overweight and makes himself unpopular with some offensive remarks. As a result, Frank and Toofer often play pranks on him.
Grizz Grisworld and Walter "Dot Com" Slattery
Dot Com ( Kevin Brown ) and Grizz ( Grizz Chapman ) are Tracy's “personal assistants” and best friends who are always around and do anything to make him look good.
Jonathan
Jonathan ( Maulik Pancholy ) is Jack's secretary who always has a speakerphone in his ear. He works very hard to please Jack, whom he greatly admires.
Jack "Danny" Baker
Danny ( Cheyenne Jackson ) is the newest member of the cast. Jack nicknamed him Danny so that no one could confuse them.

Minor characters

  • Dennis Duffy , played by Dean Winters , Liz's short-term friend who keeps coming back.

  • Devon Banks , played by Will Arnett , the gay adversary of Jack in the battle for the post of CEO of General Electric.

Episode list

reception

On its original broadcasting slot (Wednesdays, 8 p.m.), the series did not achieve convincing ratings. NBC then decided to move it to a different slot (Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.). Despite continued moderate audience numbers, another season was commissioned in April 2007. In autumn 2008, Tina Fey's Sarah Palin imitation led to significantly higher ratings for the series, so that the fourth season was ordered early in January 2009.

In contrast to the quotas, the reviews were mostly positive. Tom Shales of the Washington Post described the series as "refreshingly bright, sweet and [...] funny", Baldwin's performance was "magnificent". Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle thought 30 Rock was the funniest sitcom of the new season. New York Daily News , LA Weekly , New York Times

At the Primetime Emmy Awards 2007 , 30 Rock was named the best comedy series of the year. Elaine Stritch was awarded a Creative Arts Emmy for her guest appearance. Baldwin also won a 2007 Golden Globe Award for his role , and a year later Tina Fey also won a Golden Globe . In the Primetime Emmy Awards 2008 , 30 Rock went with a total of 17 nominations, from which four awards in the main categories of comedy series, leading actress (Tina Fey), leading actor (Alec Baldwin) and screenplay (Tina Fey for the episode "Cooter"), as well as one Award in the guest actor category ( Tim Conway for his role as Bucky Bright ) resulted.

In 2009, the series received three Golden Globe Awards in the categories of Best Series - Comedy or Musical , Best Series Leading Actor - Comedy or Musical (for Alec Baldwin) and Best Series Leading Actress - Comedy or Musical for Tina Fey. In the same year, 30 Rock was awarded the Emmy for Best Comedy Series and the Best Comedy Lead Actor (Alec Baldwin) award.

The first broadcast on ZDFneo when it went live on November 1, 2009 was watched by less than 5,000 people and was therefore below the measurable limit. This poor performance attracted attention in the American media.
