David Lawrence Schwimmer (born November 2, 1966 in New York City , New York ) is an American actor and director .

Life

David Schwimmer was born to Jewish parents in Astoria , a residential area in northwest Queens . As a teenager, he attended Beverly Hills High School and discovered his talent as an actor. He took part in an acting program at Northwestern University in Chicago . In 1988, he and seven other people - including his best friend and later acting colleague Joey Slotnick  - founded the Lookingglass Theater Company in Chicago.

Schwimmer was attracted to a large audience by the role of Dr. Ross Geller known in the popular television series Friends , which was produced in ten seasons from 1994 to 2004. Between 1999 and 2004 he directed ten episodes of the series himself. As with his colleagues from the show, there were also attempts with him to gain a foothold in the film business. During this time he played a few supporting roles, such as in Six Days, Seven Nights and the Stephen King film adaptation of The Model Student . He also continued to appear in television roles, including the 2001 award-winning miniseries Band of Brothers. We Were Brothers to a US Paratrooper Unit in World War II .

In 2008 he directed several episodes of the television series Little Britain USA . He made his first experience as a director in 1998 with the production of the television film Dümmer It's Always Going . His second television work followed in 2004 with Americana . Schwimmer made his first movie as a director in late 2006 with Run, Fatboy, Run in London . The film comedy in which u. a. Starring Simon Pegg , Hank Azaria and Thandie Newton , hit UK cinemas in September 2007 with great success. The film came to the USA in March and to Germany in April 2008. In 2010 he directed the drama Trust with Clive Owen in the leading role.

In 2005 Schwimmer lent his voice to the giraffe Melman in the Dreamworks animation film Madagascar . He also works regularly at the theater; In 2006 he was on Broadway in The Caine Her Fate by Herman Wouk and in 2012 he starred in Lisa D'Amour's Detroit play . In 2013 he staged the premiere of Keith Huff's play Big Lake Big City at the Lookingglass Theater .

Schwimmer has been married to British photographer Zoe Buckman since June 2010. Their child was born in 2011.
