action

Annie Cameron, 14, leads the normal life of a teenager, happily living with her family in the Chicago suburbs . She has a good relationship with her father and mother and also with her siblings. For her birthday, her father Will Cameron gives her the laptop of choice . She met 16-year-old Charlie in an online chat room . Both text each other regularly and Annie falls in love with the boy. After a while, Charlie Annie confesses in a message that he is not 16, but already 20 years old. Annie is initially disappointed, but does not want to give up Charlie, not even when he tells her a little later that he is not 20, but already 25 years old. After texting each other for over three months and getting closer in the process, they decide to meet in person. They meet in a mall. While Annie is still on the phone with Charlie, she suddenly speaks to a man who introduces himself as "Charlie". Annie looks at him in disbelief. “You're not 25!” Is all she brings out with tears in her eyes. The so-called Charlie succeeds in appeasing Annie, he compliments her and persuades her that age doesn't really matter, he is the person she has been writing to for months and to whom she entrusts everything. Annie slowly calms down and Charlie finally gets her to go to a motel with him . At his request, she puts on the lingerie he has brought with her, and sexual intercourse ensues, with the man ignoring Annie's words: "No, please don't".

At school, Annie confesses to her best friend Brittany, who knows what happened at the motel from her chat friend Charlie. Brittany had spotted Annie sobbing in a corner of the room, where Annie also confessed that she has hardly had any contact with Charlie since that incident. Brittany is overwhelmed by the news and informs the school administration and they finally inform the police. The FBI steps in. Annie's parents are deeply shaken. Annie doesn't want to admit it though, she tells herself that Charlie is her boyfriend and loves her. She refuses to admit that this man has used her trust in order to then abuse her. Since the FBI does not get any further with the investigation, Annie's father decides to take action himself. He becomes more and more obsessive in the search for the perpetrator, which alienates his wife Lynn and especially Annie more and more from him. Returning to “normal life” seems increasingly difficult. During a conversation between Annie and psychologist Gail Friedman, when she asked her what she thought about the fact that "Charlie" lied to her again and again about his age, she repeated the words Charlie said to her that they were soul mates and that age doesn't matter if you love each other. Annie reacts aggressively to her parents' attempts to convince her that Charlie is a sex offender. She told the psychologist that the encounter in the hotel seemed to her as if it hadn't happened to her at all, that she saw everything as if it had happened to someone else. The psychologist explains to her that this reaction is a natural protective mechanism if one is unable to cope with a situation or cannot escape it.

When the FBI finally shows Annie several pictures of Charlie's other abuse victims, she realizes that this man snuck into her trust and worked towards the abuse by feigning love and understanding. Annie, deeply hurt, admits to the abuse. Above all, Annie's father torments himself with accusations that he couldn't protect his daughter from what was done to her. The anger that rages within him affects almost all areas of his life. While his daughter is playing volleyball, he attacks a man who is taking photos of the girls. However, it turns out that his own daughter is playing on the team. Annie bitterly reproaches her father. She says he should stop reminding her over and over that she was raped. When Annie is brought to the attention of her friend Brittany on a website that one of her classmates has probably posted as a nasty prank on the Internet, on which Annie is referred to as a whore and contains the photomontages of her showing her sexual acts, she doesn't know what to do and tries to kill herself with tablets. Fortunately, her father finds her in time. Some time later, Annie discovers her father sitting alone in a chair in the autumn garden early in the morning. In the following conversation with her father, Annie realizes how much he loves her. Both find each other again.

In the end credits "Charlie" is shown with his wife and son. They happily roam a market. His real name is Graham Weston, he works as a physics teacher.

criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews, Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave Trust 4 out of 4 possible stars and especially praised the remarkable performance of the young Liana Liberato .

On teleboy.de it says: “'Friends' star David Schwimmer succeeds in his second directorial work an astonishingly impressive, touching, exciting, but also multifaceted examination of the subject. In short plot elements, he takes up both the problem of a western society that is used to oversexualized teenagers, and in another the problem of the Internet as a pillory for sex offenders. His characters are also surprisingly differentiated, the sex offender not a monster that jumps out of the bushes in the park at night. In addition to the stars Clive Owen, Catherine Keener and Viola Davis, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Help this year, in a supporting role, the ensemble towers over the newcomer Liana Liberato, who was born in Galveston, Texas as Annie, who made her film debut in an appearance on the series Cold Case - No sacrifice is ever forgotten . "

The lexicon of international film judges: "Sensitively staged and excellently cast, the sublime psychodrama illuminates the loss of familiarity and (self) security in a differentiated manner."

The television magazine Gong thinks "that the film is shocking, impressive and convincing" as well as "gripping, explosive and well cast", "it addresses the potential dangers of the Internet." The television magazine Hörzu comes to the conclusion that "David Schwimmer [ ...] with his first-class cast of actors a clever film "succeeded, which shows" that the drama with rape is far from over. Conclusion: touching, stirring and topical crime drama. "

Awards

Liana Liberato won the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress at the 46th Chicago International Film Festival in 2010 for her role in this film . In 2011 she was nominated by the Chicago Film Critics Association for the Most Promising Performer category.
