Run, Fatboy, Run is a 2007 British comedy film directed by US director David Schwimmer .

action

Dennis is unsuccessful and seems to have come to terms with it. He doesn't even bring the wedding to his heavily pregnant girlfriend Libby to an end and leaves her standing in front of the altar. Five years later, the Londoner has still not got going, but his former bride has. She caught the successful Whit, who also gets along brilliantly with Dennis' son Jake.

Dennis takes part in the Nike River Run , an inner-city marathon through London along the Thames , in order to wipe out the ambitious hobby runner Whit and at the same time prove to Libby that there is something in him and that he can do something .

To get fit for the run during the remaining three weeks, Libby's cousin Gordon and Dennis' landlord Mr. Ghoshdashtidar give him a tough training program. At the start of the marathon, Dennis and Whit clash verbally. In the course of the competition, Dennis was tripped up by Whit, as TV images show. Dennis sprained his right ankle , but didn't give up and kept walking.

Meanwhile, Whit breaks off the run and allows paramedics to take him to an adjacent hospital. There he is met by Libby and his son, who have gone to the hospital in search of Dennis. The doctor attests to Whit that he did not suffer any serious injuries in the fall in addition to a graze. The meanwhile irritable Whit pokes Jake over the mouth during a discussion, which Libby is anything but enthusiastic about. When they find out that Dennis has continued the run and is the last one on the racetrack in hours, Libby and her son set out to meet Dennis at the finish.

Gordon and Mr. Ghoshdashtidar find out about Dennis Fall on television and set out to encourage Dennis to reach his destination. Finally Dennis reaches the goal of the marathon and sinks into Libby's arms exhausted.

The next day he picks up his son at Libby's to play soccer with him in the park. On this occasion he asks Libby if he can take her out to dinner, which she replies in the affirmative.

background

The film was shot on various locations in London. Filming lasted from October 23, 2006 to December 8, 2006.

The film premiered in Great Britain on September 7, 2007. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival three days later . It was shown in US cinemas on March 28, 2008. In Germany it started on April 3, 2008. There it reached only 6,390 viewers within the first two weeks, which resulted in a box office result of 39,715 euros. On the opening weekend, more than 2.3 million US dollars were made in the USA . On April 1, total revenues worldwide were just under 35 million US dollars, of which around 15 million US dollars were earned in the home country of Great Britain. The film celebrated its free TV premiere on German television on June 12, 2010 on ProSieben .

Run, Fat Boy, Run is - after directing television films and series - the first feature film by David Schwimmer .

Originally the script intended to set the plot thematically around the Los Angeles marathon . However, after a British film team planned the implementation of the film, the plot was changed so that it was set in London. Since the rights to film the London Marathon had already been given to another film production company, the film team invented the fictional Nike River Run .

David Walliams makes a cameo on the scene at the candy store . The role he plays is similar to one from the Little Britain series , in which he embodies one of the two protagonists, who regularly attracts attention through the most impossible customer requests. The director David Schwimmer can be seen with two cameo appearances. He hands Dennis, who is participating in the marathon, a beer from the crowd at the edge of the route. Before that, he can be seen on the evening ride on the bus, with his face averted from the camera to look at his monitor, which he used to monitor the images from the recording camera. Due to the limited space inside the bus, there was no space behind the cameraman, so Swimmer had to show up.

During the film, graffiti is shown on house walls several times , showing Dennis's state of mind. A graffito can be seen after the fight between Dennis and Gordon when Dennis turns the corner of the house and collapses against the wall.

Since Harish Patel had no experience of driving a scooter, he took lessons so as not to endanger himself or the film crew while filming.

On the March 21, 2008 broadcast, David Schwimmer spoke about the scene of Hank Azaria and Simon Pegg in the gym locker room a week before the film was released in the US. Typically, male actors involved in nude scenes cover their genitals with a skin-colored pouch. Since this pouch did not want to stop at Azaria, he decided not to wear a cover, but not to inform Pegg about it. Therefore his reaction in the scene is authentic.

criticism

The editors of Blickpunkt: Film sums it up: “With his directorial debut, ' Friends ' star David Schwimmer is staging a light comedy about fathers, sons and the need to show yourself as a fighter in life. Even if his film was shot with British comedians in London, the typically malicious-biting humor is being replaced in favor of light situation comedy. "

Thomas Klingenmaier from RP Online says: “'Run, Fat Boy, Run' is not a mixture of fitness video and romantic comedy, in which it is only about the outsider getting the girl and a sports certificate in the end. 'Run, Fat Boy, Run' is about the recapture of sport by the unsportsmanlike, about the penetration of the handicapped little people into the ranks of the elite. "

Nominations and Awards

In 2007 David Schwimmer was nominated for the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards . In 2008, the film was nominated for the Empire Awards in the "Best Comedy" category.
