Stephen Merchant (born November 24, 1974 in Bristol , England ) is a British screenwriter , director and actor . Together with Ricky Gervais he created the successful British pseudo-documentary series The Office .

Life

In 1997 Merchant got a job at the London radio station Xfm to work with the local head of speech Ricky Gervais . A little later both got their own show on Sunday evening. In 1998, Merchant and Gervais were fired when the Capital Radio Group took over the station.

In the summer of 2001, the first season of The Office was shown on the British television channel BBC Two . A little later, Merchant and Gervais were reinstated at Xfm, where they discovered Karl Pilkington's talent . Merchant appears as Oggy ( aka The Oggmonster ) on a season two episode of The Office . His father, Ron Merchant, appears twice in the silent role of a perplexed janitor. Merchant is also one of the producers of the American version of The Office with Steve Carell in the lead role (until the end of the seventh season).

The sitcom Merchant and Gervais, Extras , was first broadcast on 21 July 2005 on BBC Two. Merchant plays the role of Darren Lamb , Andy Millman's agent , played by Gervais.

In 2007 he starred alongside Simon Pegg in David Schwimmer's comedy film Run, Fatboy, Run and Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz .

In addition, Merchant lends his voice to the artificial intelligence Wheatley in the computer game Portal 2

The series Hello Ladies , developed from his stand-up comedy for HBO , ran with 8 episodes in 2013 and ended with a film a year later. In addition to starring Stuart Pritchard , Merchant co-wrote and directed several episodes. In Germany, the series was shown in 2014 on Sky Atlantic HD .
