Logan - The Wolverine is an American action film about the cartoon character Wolverine from the X-Men series by Marvel . After X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and Wolverine: Weg des Kriegers (2013) it is the third single film adaptation of the title character and the tenth part of the X-Men film series . The film is inspired by Mark Millar 's Old Man Logan comic series . As in the previous film, James Mangold directed again. The film marks the last appearance of leading actor Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine, whom he played in a total of nine X-Men films.

Patrick Stewart , who portrays Charles Xavier for the seventh and also for the last time , and Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney , who fills her first film role, and Boyd Holbrook , who starred in a comic adaptation for the first time in his acting career, can be seen in other leading roles . With a running time of over 137 minutes, Logan - The Wolverine is the longest Wolverine solo film to date.

action

The year 2029. In a timeline divided after the events of X-Men: The Future is Past , no new mutants have been born for 25 years. Logan's ability to heal himself is severely weakened and he has aged. The adamantium coating on his skeleton has started to leak into his body and slowly poison him. Logan works as a limousine driver in El Paso, Texas. In an abandoned smelting plant in northern Mexico, he and the mutant tracker Caliban take care of the 90-year-old Charles Xavier, Logan's mentor and founder of the X-Men. Charles, a telepath, has now developed a form of dementia that causes destructive and even fatal seizures if not controlled with medication. It is implied that one such attack killed seven mutants a year earlier, leaving the three (Logan, Charles, Caliban) as the last of the X-Men.

Gabriela Lopez, a former nurse with the biotechnology company Alkali-Transigen, tries to hire Logan to accompany her and 11-year-old girl Laura to Eden, a North Dakota sanctuary. Logan reluctantly accepts, but finds Gabriela dead. In his hiding place, he is confronted with Gabriela's killer Donald Pierce, Transigen's cyborg security chief, who is looking for Laura. Laura was hiding in Logan's limousine. She has skills similar to Logan's. She, Logan, and Charles escape Pierce and his Reavers, but Caliban is captured and forced by Pierce to put the pursuers on Laura's trail.

A video on Gabriela's cell phone shows that the transgender Laura and other children created from mutated DNA samples as living weapons. Laura was created from Logan's DNA. As it proved difficult to control and transgender people found an alternative, the children should be killed, but Gabriela and other nurses helped some of them escape.

In Oklahoma City, Logan discovers that Eden appears in an X-Men comic in Laura's possession, so he assumes it is a fictional location. The Reavers arrive, but Charles has a seizure, paralyzing almost everyone in the vicinity except Logan and Laura, who kill the attackers, inject Charles with his drugs, and end the seizure. When they flee, Dr. Zander Rice, the head of Transigenes, to help Pierce.

Logan, Laura and Charles help the farmer Will Munson and his family after a traffic accident and after some deliberation accept an invitation to dinner at their house. Logan drives out a gang of thugs from an agricultural company trying to force Will to sell his farm. Meanwhile, Rice unleashes X-24, a clone of Logan in his prime, kills Charles and Will's family, injures Will badly, and captures Laura. Caliban releases grenades, kills himself and several Reavers, and also injures Pierce. Logan fights X-24, but is defeated. Will rams the X-24 with his truck, but dies from his injuries. Logan and Laura escape with Charles' body.

Logan faints after burying Charles. Laura takes him to a doctor and then persuades Logan to take her to Eden, where they find Rictor and other transigenous children preparing to go to Canada. Laura finds an adamantium cartridge that Logan has had since his escape from the Weapon X and that he kept so that he might commit suicide. Logan decides his job is done and decides not to go with her, much to Laura's dismay.

But the children are pursued and captured by the Reavers. Logan takes an overdose of a serum given to him by Rictor that temporarily strengthens his physical and healing abilities. With Laura's help, he kills most of the Reavers, but the serum is wearing off. When Pierce holds Rictor at gunpoint, Rice tells Logan, who killed Rice's father years ago while escaping from Weapon X, that no new mutants were born because a transigenic virus was spread through the world's food supply. Rice is shot by Logan, who then attacks Pierce. X-24, angry at Rice's death, fights Logan. The children use their skills to kill Pierce and the rest of the Reavers. X-24 fatally injures Logan, but is shot by Laura with an adamantium cartridge.

Shortly before his death, Logan says that Laura shouldn't be the weapon she was made into, and after Laura tearfully acknowledges him as her father, Logan dies peacefully in Laura's arms. Laura and the children mourn Logan's death and bury him near a lake, as does Charles. After the funeral, Laura turns his grave cross on its side to create an X that will honor him as the last of the X-Men. She then leaves with the other children to continue her journey across the Canadian border.

production

In November 2013, the 20th Century Fox studio and Hugh Jackman began negotiations about another Wolverine solo film. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg would take over the production again, as in numerous other X-Men films. On March 21, 2014, David James Kelly was hired to write the script. In March 2015, Jackman announced via Instagram that he wanted to play the role of Wolverine for the last time in Logan after 17 years. So he published a picture with the words "Wolverine ... One Last Time" (German: "Wolverine ... one last time"). Jackman also indicated that the film would be an adaptation of the eight-part comic book series Old Man Logan . Mark Millar confirmed this shortly afterwards.

On May 9, 2016, Kinberg confirmed that the film would receive a so-called R-Rating , a high age rating . After Deadpool , Logan is the second film in the X-Men series that was shot in an R-rated version. Kinberg described the film as "violent" and "a bit like a western ", which differs significantly in its basic tone from its predecessor films. To ensure that the film was actually conceived in an R-rated version, Jackman waived part of his fee.

“This represents to me the kind of aggressive, classical Wolverine action that we want in the movie - more of something that fans have been asking for, for a really long time. We've been limited in one way or another from giving it to them, but I think we've got the go-ahead to really go for it on this picture. So we're really trying to deliver what folks have always imagined those kind of battles would look like. There is a lot of high-octane action in the movie. We're just trying to do it very differently and very viscerally. "

We were restricted in one way or another to give it to them, but I think we have the go-ahead for this film. So we're really trying to live up to people's ideas of what these fights would be like. There is plenty of powerful action in the film. We just try to do it very differently and very instinctively. "

In February 2015, Patrick Stewart confirmed his involvement in the film and emphasized in August 2015 that he would play a central role, thus ruling out an ordinary cameo . That same month, Liev Schreiber confirmed that he was currently negotiating with the studio to return to the role of Victor Creed, whom he played in X-Men Origins: Wolverine . But the negotiation stalled and so in April 2016 Mangold decided on Boyd Holbrook as the main antagonist of the film. That same month, Richard E. Grant was confirmed in an unspecified role for the film. In October 2016, it was finally confirmed that Holbrook would impersonate a cyborg named Donald Pierce, who has been described as a "relentless head of security". At the same time, the so-called Reavers for the film were confirmed. The Reavers are a team of criminal cyborgs who are set up as contract killers and are led by Donald Pierce. Stephen Merchant was also confirmed in the role of Caliban at the end of April . This is the same character who was played by Tómas Lemarquis in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 . According to Mangold, a new line-up was chosen because the character should be portrayed in a more comic-faithful manner. In May 2016, Eriq La Salle and Elise Neal were confirmed in additional roles.

In the audio commentary of the home release of X-Men: Apocalypse , Bryan Singer confirmed that the villain Mr. Sinister would be seen for the first time in Logan . But in January 2017 Mangold revealed that in the end they had decided against an appearance by Mr. Sinister because they wanted to make the film as realistic as possible and " a villain in a costume " would damage the integrity of the film. It was also announced that the mutant X-23, a female clone of Wolverine, will also appear and will be portrayed by Dafne Keen . In media reports, Sienna Novikov, Keen's stunt double , was initially mistakenly listed as the actress in X-23 due to set photos that had been in circulation since July 2016 . This prompted director Mangold to make a correction at the end of October 2016.

Filming

In May 2016, Kinberg confirmed the start of filming. The shooting took place in the US state of New Mexico , which was considered an ideal setting due to its dry desert landscape. Filming was declared over on August 19, 2016. The budget was $ 97 million.

Publishing and Marketing

The world premiere of the film was on February 17, 2017 at the 67th International Film Festival in Berlin . The film ran in regular German cinemas on March 2, 2017, and one day later in North America. The official and final film title Logan was announced by Jackman on October 5, 2016. In November 2016, selected critics were presented with 40 minutes of material from the film at a first screening of several upcoming 20th Century Fox film projects.

The release of the first trailer took place on October 20, 2016. The music was accompanied by Hurt by Johnny Cash . In the first 24 hours, the 1:46 minute trailer generated more than 20 million views and even surpassed the first trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 , which was released the day before. The trailer was discussed in detail in the trade press and was voted the best trailer of the year by Empire Magazine at the end of December 2016 and was praised by other portals as one of the best trailers of the year.

In early January 2017, character posters of Jackman as Logan, Keen as Laura and Stewart as Xavier were released. The second trailer was released in mid-January 2017, underlaid with the piece of music Way Down We Go by Kaleo . Shortly thereafter, Empire magazine published a detailed article on the film in which director Mangold had his say and which contained several exclusive sets. On February 6, 2017, during the Super Bowl LI commercial break, a TV commercial was broadcast, which was accompanied by the spiritual song Amazing Grace . The 30-second spot cost 20th Century Fox approximately $ 5 million. Two TV spots had already been broadcast the day before.

A re-release of the film in black and white for selected cinemas has been announced in the USA for May 16, 2017.

In January 2020, the film was released on the streaming service Netflix .

Film music

On July 1, 2016, it was announced that Cliff Martinez would be designing the soundtrack. But on December 31, 2016 Martinez was replaced by the American film composer Marco Beltrami , who had already created the score for the previous film Wolverine: Weg des Kriegers and who had previously worked on the death train to Yuma together with director Mangold .
