Way to the Super Bowl

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons under head coach Dan Quinn won the National Football Conference after the regular season picked up with a record of 11-5 No. 2 in the NFC Seedings and the NFC playoffs after a bye out the Seattle Seahawks with 36:20, then defeated the Green Bay Packers 44:21. They convinced with a strong offense , which achieved the best league value of 540 points. The focus was on quarterback Matt Ryan , who scored career highs of 38 touchdowns and 4,944 yards of space in 7 interceptions and was voted into the Pro Bowl , the  all-star game of  the National Football League . He was mainly supported by wide receiver Julio Jones (1,409 yards of space gained , 6 touchdowns), running back Devonta Freeman (1,079 yards of space gained, 11 touchdowns) and center Alex Mack , who were also all elected to the Pro Bowl. In defense , Pro Bowl defensive end Vic Beasley triumphed with the best league score of 15.5 quarterback sacks , but the team with 406 opposing points (27th place out of 32 teams) was considered vulnerable in defense. For the Falcons it was the second Super Bowl participation since Super Bowl XXXIII , which they lost with 19:34 against the Denver Broncos .

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots under head coach Bill Belichick came for the American Football Conference after they finished the regular season with a record of 14-2 at No. 1 AFC seedings and in the AFC playoffs after a bye, the Houston Texans with 34:16, then defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 36:17. They had the strongest defense in the league in terms of points (only 250 opponent points), led by Pro Bowl defenders Dont'a Hightower ( linebacker ) and Devin McCourty ( free safety ), and were also in the offense with 441 points (league-wide 3rd place) dangerous. Her attack was led by quarterback Tom Brady , who despite four games suspension ( Deflategate affair ) scored 3,554 yards of space and 28 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions and was elected to the Pro Bowl, and in the special teams carried Pro Bowl gunner Matthew Slater contributed to the fact that opposing kick returner or punt returner were neutralized. For the Patriots it was the ninth Super Bowl participation (NFL record), of which they previously won four, most recently the Super Bowl XLIX . Belichick and Brady achieved their fifth Super Bowl victory, which is a new record for starting quarterbacks and head coaches.

Course of the game

1st half

After a scoring first quarter, the Falcons scored three touchdowns in quick succession in the second quarter . First, running back Devonta Freeman ran into the end zone for the first time from five yards . Matt Bryant was successful with the point after touchdown (PAT) and it was ATL 7, NE 0. After the Falcons defense had forced a fumble from Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount , Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan completed a touchdown throw from 19 yards on tight end Austin Hooper . Matt Bryant was successful with PAT. Falcons cornerback Robert Alford managed an 82-yard touchdown after an interception from Patriots quarterback Tom Brady , and after another successful PAT from Matt Bryant it was 21-0 for Atlanta. Seconds before half-time, Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski scored a field goal to make it 3:21 from the Patriots' point of view.

2nd half

At the beginning of the third quarter, Falcons running back Tevin Coleman extended the lead with another touchdown. Matt Bryant again scored a PAT for the ATL 28, NE 3. Apparently a preliminary decision, because a Super Bowl team had never won after being more than ten points behind. The Patriots struck back shortly afterwards with their first touchdown by running back James White , NE 9, ATL 28. Stephen Gostkowski's PAT attempt was unsuccessful. To stay in possession of the ball, the Patriots attempted an onside kick , but it was captured by the Falcons.

After Atlanta had to punt after the next attack series for lack of space , Patriots quarterback Tom Brady led his team to the 7-yard line at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but only one more field goal from Gostkowski (NE 12, ATL 28) jumped out. Shortly afterwards, Patriots linebacker Dont'a Hightower managed a quarterback sack against Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who fumbled the football, so that Patriots lineman Alan Branch took him. A little later Brady threw his first touchdown on wide receiver Danny Amendola . A two-point conversion by James White was then successful, NE 20; ATL 28. In the following Falcons attack series the preliminary decision seemed to be made when wide receiver Julio Jones caught the ball at the 22-yard line four minutes from time - a successful field goal from this short distance would have increased the lead to eleven points , more than the eight points that can be awarded for a successful series of attacks (six from touchdown plus two from two-point conversion). However, the Falcons lost a total of 23 yards of space in the next three moves after a failed run, a quarterback sack from Patriots lineman Trey Flowers and a penalty for illegal holding , so that a field goal was impossible and they punted the ball back to the Patriots had to. In the following series of attacks, a throw from Brady was touched and almost intercepted by cornerback Robert Alford, but Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman managed, despite triple coverage, to catch the football millimeters above the sward and complete an important 23-yard catch. 57 seconds before the end, the Patriots equalized the eight-point deficit with another touchdown from White and a successful two-point conversion (Brady litter on Amendola, NE 28, ATL 28).

OT

In the overtime , the Patriots won the coin toss and only reached the end zone of the Falcons with 1st and 2nd downs, so that running back James White could run the touchdown to victory from two yards (NE 34, ATL 28).

Résumé

The game has been named one of the best Super Bowls because of the Patriots' historic comeback and the first Overtime Super Bowl. On the Patriots side, Tom Brady was praised for having led “the best comeback in the history of the Super Bowl”, supported by Julian Edelman's “incredible” 23-yard catch despite the triple coverage that the Patriots made shortly before the end Near the end zone of the Falcons. The blame for the fall of the Falcons was mainly given to Kyle Shanahan , the offensive coordinator of the Falcons, as he preferred aggressive passing plays over the quarterback in the fourth quarter instead of safe running plays over the running backs . This helped quarterback Matt Ryan first suffer a sack of fumble that cut the Patriots down to 28:20, and the Falcons just before the end instead of a short field goal (which would have increased the lead to a barely recoverable 11 points) gave the Patriots the chance to drive the Falcons away with another sack for a field goal - which they promptly did. Shanahan defended that the Falcons had won many games with their aggressive offense, but the Falcons felt they had risked too much. Another factor was the fact that the Patriots had much longer attacking streaks, so the Falcons' offense was only on the pitch for 46 plays and their defense was on for 93 plays (i.e. the equivalent of one and a half normal football games) and therefore in the closing stages physically waned.
