Matthew Edward Patricia (born September 13, 1974 in Sherrill , New York ) is an American football coach. He is currently Head Coach of the Detroit Lions in the NFL . Before that, he was an assistant coach in various positions with the New England Patriots , with whom he won the Super Bowl three times .

Career

After high school, Patricia played for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a center and guard. After he left school with his bachelor's degree , he got a job as an assistant coach. After a three-year hiatus from engineering, he accepted a position as an assistant coach at Amherst College . From 2001 he trained at Syracuse University before becoming assistant coach under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots in 2004.

With the Patriots, Patricia's responsibility changed over the years before he was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in 2012 . During his time with the Patriots, he won the Super Bowl three times : once, in 2005 , as an offensive assistant and twice, in 2015 and 2017 , as a defensive coordinator.

Following those successes, Patricia became the Detroit Lions head coach in 2018 . His first few years were not necessarily a success: Both times the Lions ended the season in last place in the NFC North . In his first season he was able to record 6 wins out of 10 defeats, while in the second season there were only 3 wins out of 12 defeats and a draw.
