‹  Super Bowl XLVIII Super Bowl 50  ›

The Super Bowl XLIX was the 49th Super Bowl , the final game of the 2014 season of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . The game was 16:30 local time (February 2 0:30 am on Feb. 1, 2015 GMT ) in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale ( Arizona ), the home ground of the Arizona Cardinals held. The champions of the American Football Conference (AFC), the New England Patriots , won 28:24 against the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC), the Seattle Seahawks . For Super Bowl MVP was quarterback of the New England Patriots, Tom Brady , selected.

The way to the Super Bowl

The University of Phoenix Stadium was the venue for the 49th Super Bowl.

With the Seattle Seahawks (champions of the NFC) and the New England Patriots (champions of the AFC), those teams prevailed that were number 1 in their conferences after the regular season with 12: 4 wins in the play-offs . For the Seahawks, who won last year's Super Bowl XLVIII , moving into Super Bowl XLIX meant their third participation in the final. The New England Patriots are taking part in the Super Bowl for the eighth time, the last time they lost the Super Bowl XLVI in 2011 . The German right tackle Sebastian Vollmer of the Patriots became, after Markus Koch (who won the title with the Redskins in 1988), the first German Super Bowl winner to start playing in Germany.

Seattle Seahawks

The defending champion from Seattle initially struggled with injury problems, which contributed to the moderate start of three wins and three losses. After head coach Pete Carroll's team won nine of their last ten games, they ended the regular season with 12: 4 wins as number 1 on the NFC seeding list. In the Divisional Play-off the Carolina Panthers were defeated 31:17 and then in the NFC Championship Game the Green Bay Packers 28:22 after extra time, with the Seahawks trailing 7:19 after a weak game with five ball losses shortly before the end, then Scored 15 points in just 44 seconds and won in extra time .

The heart of the Seahawks were their strong defensive backs around cornerback Richard Sherman and the two safeties Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas , who are known as Legion of Boom . Together with linebacker Bobby Wagner , they helped Seattle to collect only 254 points in the regular season and allow the opponent to gain only 2,970 yards of space after throws (both first place in the NFL). In the rather moderate offense (394 points, 14th place), running back Marshawn Lynch (1,306 yards gain, 13 touchdowns ) carried the brunt, supported by quarterback Russell Wilson (3,475 yards gain, 20 touchdowns, 7 interceptions ). Sherman, Chancellor, Thomas, Wagner and Lynch were voted into both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro .

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots caused a sensation in the transfer market when they signed the two Pro Bowl cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner and gave up their long-time Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins . After a slow start of two wins and two losses, Head Coach Bill Belichick's team won ten of their last twelve games and took first place on the AFC's seeding list. In the divisional play-off, the Baltimore Ravens were defeated 35:31 after the Patriots twice made up a deficit of 14 points (0:14 and 14:28) before the Indianapolis Colts were eliminated 45: 7 in the AFC Championship Game . The showpiece of the team from New England was the strong offense (468 points, 4th place) around quarterback Tom Brady (4,109 yards of space gained, 30 touchdowns, 9 interceptions) and tight end Rob Gronkowski (1,124 yards of space gained, 12 touchdowns), supported by wide receivers Julian Edelman (92 passports captured). As a returner, Edelman was also an important part of the strong special teams unit around kicker Stephen Gostkowski and Gunner Matthew Slater . The defense (313 points approved, 8th place) around the newly signed Revis and Browner was also remarkable. Gronkowski, Gostkowski, Slater and Revis were voted into both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro, Brady made it to the Pro Bowl. For Brady and Belichick, entering the Super Bowl XLIX meant their sixth finals.

After the AFC Finals, it was reported that 11 of the 12 footballs the Patriots used against the Colts were inflated to low pressure (at least 12.5 psi ). A soft football makes it easier for the quarterback to throw because the grip is more secure. This as " Deflategate (let escape ger .:" deflate "= air)" designated offense loaded the preparations of New England, even if the investigations to the Super Bowl brought no clear results.

Match report

1st half

After a sluggish start by both teams, the Patriots made it deep into the Seahawks' half before Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw an interception on Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane . In doing so, Lane was tackled so hard that he broke his wrist and was eliminated. In the second quarter Brady completed a touchdown pass from 11 yards to wide receiver Brandon LaFell ( Point after Touchdown (PAT) Stephen Gostkowski , NE 7: SEA 0). After a big play by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (44- yard pass to wide receiver Chris Matthews ), Seattle struck back when running back Marshawn Lynch ran from 3 yards into the end zone (PAT Steven Hauschka , NE 7: SEA 7 ). Half-time ended spectacularly when Brady completed his second touchdown pass 31 seconds before the end, this time to tight end Rob Gronkowski (PAT Gostkowski, NE 14: SEA 7), but Seattle gained 80 yards in just 29 seconds and Wilson with only 2 seconds remaining completed a touchdown pass to Chris Matthews (PAT Hauschka, NE 14: SEA 14).

2nd half

Seattle got deep into New England's half early, so kicker Steven Hauschka scored a field goal from 27 yards and Seattle led for the first time (NE 14: SEA 17). The Seahawks quickly expanded their lead when their linebacker Bobby Wagner intercepted another pass from Brady . Wilson soon threw his second touchdown pass, this time from 3 yards to wide receiver Doug Baldwin (PAT Hauschka, NE 14: SEA 24). Baldwin inadvertently got help from a referee standing in the path of his opponent Darrelle Revis . In the last quarter, the Patriots started their race to catch up with Brady first placing a “3. Down and 14 yards ”situation with a 21-yard pass to wide receiver Julian Edelman solved and then played a touchdown pass to wide receiver Danny Amendola from 4 yards with almost eight minutes remaining on the clock (PAT Gostkowski, NE 21: SEA 24 ). With 2:02 minutes left, Brady completed his fourth touchdown pass from 3 yards to Edelman (PAT Gostkowski, NE 28: SEA 24). After an acrobatic catch from wide receiver Jermaine Kearse , Seattle was a yard from New England's end zone with 20 seconds to go before the Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler intercepted a pass from Wilson and decided the game. The Seahawks missed the chance to tackle the Patriots standing on the 1-yard line in their own end zone and get two points and possession through a safety , as their defensive end , Michael Bennett , started before the start of the play. This violation of the rules brought New England five yards of space and significantly reduced the risk of a safety. Then the Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin started a fight and was sent off. Finally, Brady knelt down the game ( quarterback Kneel ) and let the clock run down.

Butler's interception was instantly portrayed as one of the greatest moments in recent Super Bowl history. But Seattle's decision to play a pass with just one yard distance to the end zone and 20 seconds remaining before the game-winning interception was sharply criticized in the media from Seattle, New England, and many players. It was unanimously noted that a run by Seattle's running back Marshawn Lynch would have made more sense, as he had already run 102 yards, a touchdown, and four yards in the previous play alone. A run over Lynch would have had a better chance, at least on paper, of conquering the last yard for a touchdown or minimizing the risk of losing the ball. The Seahawks coaching team commented that the Patriots blocked the path with eight heavy defenders and that the defense consisted of only three defensive backs . Therefore, the decision was made for a quick throw, which was "not optimal" in this situation.

Awards and records

The quarterback of the New England Patriots , Tom Brady , has been named Super Bowl MVP , selected after four touchdowns with two interceptions recorded and completed 37 of his 50 throws. Brady set several records in this game. With his fourth Super Bowl victory, Brady equalized the record for starting quarterbacks and caught up with Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw , previously he had broken another record for starting quarterbacks with his sixth Super Bowl participation. With his third Super Bowl MVP he caught up with Joe Montana, and his 12th Super Bowl touchdown broke Montana's record (11) - in the end he had 13 touchdowns. His 37 successful litters exceeded the previous mark by Peyton Manning (34). With his 22nd play-off victory, Brady further expanded his own record (Montana is in second place with 16). The Patriots' head coach , Bill Belichick , who also celebrated his fourth Super Bowl victory in his sixth Super Bowl participation (all with Brady as starting quarterback), set Chuck Noll's record with his fourth title .

Cornerback Brandon Browner became only the third player to win the US Super Bowl twice and the Canadian Gray Cup once . Defensive end Chandler Jones won the Super Bowl two years after his older brother Arthur Jones ( Super Bowl XLVII ), while his eldest brother Jon "Bones" Jones was the reigning world champion in mixed martial arts ( UFC ) at that time . For defensive all-rounder Rob Ninkovich , the Super Bowl win was doubly gratifying as it happened on his 31st birthday.
