Christopher Douglas "Chris" Matthews (born October 6, 1989 ) is an American Canadian football and American football player on the position of wide receiver . He last played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Career

college

Matthews attended Susan Miller Dorsey High School in Los Angeles , where he appeared for the school team as tight end and defensive end . He then went to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and played college football for the UCLA Bruins. He later moved to Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC), a junior college . At LAHC, Matthews switched to the position of wide receiver .

In 2009 Matthews moved to the University of Kentucky , where he played with the Kentucky Wildcats. He reached 354 yards after 32 catches in 2009, scoring 3 touchdowns. In 2010 Matthews had 61 pass catches and reached 925 yards with 9 touchdowns .

NFL

Cleveland Browns and Iowa Barnstormers

After Matthews was not drafted in the 2011 NFL Draft , the Cleveland Browns signed Matthews as a free agent . He was released after the training camps. Matthews then played for the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League in 2012 . He caught 36 passes, reaching 472 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Barnstormers.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

In 2012 Matthews signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL). In his first season he played in all 18 games, reaching 1,192 yards in 81 catches, scoring 7 touchdowns. This won him the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award .

In 2013, Matthews was injured, which is why he was only able to play four games. He reached 138 yards and a touchdown. After the season his contract expired and he was a free agent.

Seattle Seahawks

Matthews was invited to a trial training session with the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 . On February 18, 2014, Matthews signed a contract with the Seahawks. He was fired after the preseason, but signed up for the Practice Squad a day later. On December 6, 2014, he was appointed to the main squad. He played three games without ever catching a pass.

In the 2015 NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers , Matthews captured an onside kick , which enabled the Seahawks to win the game and move into Super Bowl XLIX . It was there that Matthews made his first catch in the NFL. Overall he got a touchdown at 109 yards of space.

Baltimore Ravens

After the Seahawks released Matthews on November 17, 2015, the Baltimore Ravens accepted him into their Practice Squad . On December 12, 2015, he was promoted to the main squad. On September 3, 2016, Matthews was placed on the Injured Reserve List by the Ravens , bringing the 2016 season to an early end for him. At the beginning of the 2017 season , Matthews was laid off in the final roster downsizing. Just two days later, however, he was re-signed after Maurice Canady was injured. He caught three passes for 25 yards and was mainly used in the special teams before being released again on November 3, 2017.

Calgary Stampeders

In October 2018, the Calgary Stampeders signed Matthews. In four games he caught 12 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown. In the postseason he was able to achieve seven passes for 98 yards, four catches for 59 yards of which in the 106th Gray Cup , which he won with the Stampeders. In December 2018, he was fired to explore his NFL chances.
