history

The Des Moines Register follows the tradition of the first Des Moines newspaper, the Iowa Star (1849), whose title was Iowa Statesman from 1854 , Iowa State Journal from 1857 and Iowa State Leader from 1870 . The newspaper appeared three times a week from 1857 and daily from 1862. The Iowa State Leader was affiliated with the Democratic Party and was in competition with the Iowa State Register , which was founded in 1860 as the first daily newspaper in Des Moines and was related to the Republican Party .

In 1902, Iowa State Leader and Iowa State Register were merged to form the Iowa Register and Leader . In 1915 the newspaper was renamed The Des Moines Register .
