NFL season
 <2013 2015>

The 2014 NFL season marked the 95th season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 4, 2014 with the game of the reigning Super Bowl winner Seattle Seahawks against the Green Bay Packers . The play-offs began on January 3, 2015 and the Super Bowl XLIX took place on February 1, 2015.

Rule changes

Before this season there were the following rule changes, which were decided at the meeting of the club owners on March 25th and 26th, 2014.

  • There is no timeout for a sack . So far, this has only been the case within the last two minutes of a half.
  • The goal posts were raised from 30 feet to 35 feet.
  • Including the football goal when cheering after a touchdown is now considered unsportsmanlike conduct and results in a 15- yard penalty. This rule change was due to the play between the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12 of the 2013 season as a tight end Jimmy Graham a dunk over the crossbar performed while bent the gate, which led to an interruption of the game to the damage to fix. Furthermore, it is feared that the increase in the goal posts could lead to more frequent damage than before.
  • So-called "roll up blocks" against defense players are no longer only prohibited from behind, but also from the side. In this case, the offense players must start the block above the knee of the opponent.
  • The Referee may now consult with the NFL Officiating Department while examining a scene with the help of the video evidence.
  • The rules regarding which moves can and cannot be checked using video evidence will be redefined. In particular, the conquest of a free ball after a fumble can now be checked. This rule change resulted from NaVorro Bowman's conquered Fumble in the preseason NFC Championship Game , which was not given.
  • Penalties for fouls by defense are implemented from the last spot instead of the end of the game turn or the location of the foul.

NFL draft

Jadeveon Clowney was the first player selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The 2014 NFL Draft took place May 8-10 at Radio City Music Hall in New York . A total of 256 players were selected during the draft. The order in which the teams were allowed to vote was due to the result that the team achieved in the 2013 season. The Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens both ended the season with an 8–8 record and an identical Strength Of Schedule . H. the strength of the opponents in the regular season, so a coin was flipped to determine the exact order. The cowboys won this coin toss and were able to vote in 16th place. Since the Houston Texans had the worst record in the past 2013 season, they had the right to select the first player in the draft. With the first round pick, they chose the defensive end Jadeveon Clowney from the University of South Carolina . The last time a defense player was selected came in the 2006 draft when Mario Williams was selected. The draft received media attention from Michael Sam , who was selected in the seventh round in 249th place by the St. Louis Rams and thereby became the first publicly homosexual, active professional in the National Football League (NFL).

The following changes to the stadiums will result for the 2014 season:

Play-offs

The play-offs began on January 3, 2015 with the Wild Card Round and ended on February 1, 2015 with the Super Bowl XLIX at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona. In the end, the New England Patriots won the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy . After the AFC Championship game, which the New England Patriots won against the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 , Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspected of using over-inflated footballs. A soft football makes it easier to throw, especially in cold winter weather. In this incident, known as the " Deflategate ", Brady was suspended for the first four games of the following season until he was acquitted later in the year, and the Patriots lost two draft picks.
