The Empower Field at Mile High is a football stadium in the US city of Denver in the state of Colorado . The sports facility is mainly used for the home games of the Denver Broncos from the National Football League (NFL). The football franchise the Colorado Rapids from Major League Soccer (MLS) wore his games from 2001 to 2006 in the Mile High from before the new 2007 Dick's Sporting Goods Park moved.

history

On August 17, 1999, work began on the Broncos' new home . After two years, the stadium was inaugurated on August 11, 2001. The first NFL game of the regular season took place on September 10, 2001 in front of 75,735 spectators between the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants (31:20). The new stadium replaced the Mile High Stadium, inaugurated in 1948, in the immediate vicinity. It was demolished in 2001 and parking spaces for the new Mile High were created in the open space .

With the Sports Authority Field at Mile High, a six-year sports facility construction program for the city of Denver was completed, which also included the Coors Field baseball stadium and the multi-purpose arena Pepsi Center . Since then the football stadium has occasionally been used for other events. In August 2003, the heavy metal band Metallica performed in front of a record crowd of 100,000 at the Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Around 84,000 people were there when Barack Obama , the then Democratic Senator from Illinois, accepted the nomination for the presidential nomination on August 28, 2008 in his globally acclaimed speech. The name of the stadium "Mile High" is derived from the height above sea level. Mile High Stadium is about a mile (1,609 meters) above sea level , making the Sports Authority at Mile High the highest stadium in the NFL.

In 2016, the stadium's namesake, the sporting goods retailer Sports Authority, went bankrupt ( Chapter 11 ). In April and July 2016, the marijuana producers Native Roots and O.penVAPE showed interest in acquiring the naming rights. The project would have failed due to a veto by the NFL and the Broncos would prefer to keep the previous name for the time being. In early August 2016, the Denver Broncos themselves acquired the naming rights to the stadium. The goal is to sell to a financially strong sponsor who pays around nine million euros annually. The income is to flow into the modernization of the stadium. The Denver Broncos expect renovation costs of 270 million euros over the next 30 years. In January 2018, the signs with the stadium name were removed. The Denver Broncos are still looking for a new name sponsor .

In June 2018, the venue was given the temporary name Broncos Stadium at Mile High until a new, financially strong sponsor was found. This was on September 4, 2019 Empower Retirement , a Altersvorsorger found based in Denver. The sponsorship agreement was concluded for 21 years until 2039.
