The 2013 NFL season marked the 94th season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season started on September 5, 2013 and ended on December 29, 2013. The play-offs began on January 4, 2014 and ended with the Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2, 2014.

Rule changes

The following rule changes were made prior to this season:

  • If the head coach requests video evidence, although the move is already checked automatically ( booth review ), the move will still be checked. A penalty of 15 yards remains as the move is considered unsportsmanlike conduct (game delay). In the nationally televised game on Thanksgiving Day in 2012, accused the head coach of the Detroit Lions , Jim Schwartz , the Challenge Flag where the for a play running back of the Houston Texans , Justin Forsett , touched his knee to the ground, got up and one touchdown scored. The penalty prevented video evidence and the touchdown being withdrawn, and the Texans won the game in overtime .
  • Long snapper have the field goal no direct opponent more, they are considered Defenseless Player . In addition, there may be no more than six players on either side of the ball (5 yards penalty). Players who are not on the line of scrimmage are no longer allowed to push opponents into blockers (15 yard penalty).
  • The so-called peel-back block , in which a player from the attacking team blocks a player from the defending team below the waist (from behind or from the side) while he is moving towards his own end zone , has also been banned and ends within the tackle box in a 15 yard penalty. The rule has been tightened because the players cannot see a block of this type coming and cannot protect themselves. So had to linebacker Brian Cushing of the Houston Texans in 2012 his season after a peel-back block from the Guard of the New York Jets , Matt Slauson injury, quit.
  • Players on the attacking team will also be punished if they act with their helmets first and are outside the tackle box (15 yards penalty).
  • The number assignment has been changed slightly. Now tight ends and H-backs can also wear shirt numbers 40–49.
  • The Tuck Rule from the 1999 season was abolished. If a quarterback fakes a pass ( pump fake ) and loses the ball while pulling it back towards the body, this is considered a fumble . The old rule repeatedly led to contentious decisions. The best known is the play-off game of the Oakland Raiders at the New England Patriots of the 2001 season . In the game later called Tuck Rule Game , a pass attempt by the Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was rated as an incomplete pass. That decision, and the Patriots' 16:13 win, resulted in the game later being voted one of the most controversial in NFL history.

NFL draft

Eric Fisher was selected as the first player in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The 2013 NFL Draft took place April 25-27 at Radio City Music Hall in New York . Since the Kansas City Chiefs had the worst record in the past 2012 season , they had the right to select the first player in the draft. With the first round pick, they chose the offensive tackle Eric Fisher from Central Michigan University . This is the fourth time that a tackle has been selected first in the draft. A total of 254 players were drafted, eleven of which, more than ever before, were not from the United States (e.g. linebacker Björn Werner ).

Regular season

The regular season was marked by historic offensive performances. A total of 11,985 points were achieved during the season, which means an average of 46.8 points, the highest point average ever achieved in the NFL. In addition, a total of 1,338 touchdowns were achieved, breaking the record of 1,297 touchdowns set up last season. The Denver Broncos (13: 3 wins) were the first team in NFL history to break the 600-point limit (606), set a new touchdown record (76) and only became the fifth team to score 50 and in three season games scored more points. Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning broke the NFL season records for both touchdowns (55) and space gain (5,477 yards). Manning also threw seven touchdowns on September 5, 2013 at the season opener against the reigning Super Bowl winner Baltimore Ravens and set the NFL record. This performance was equalized on November 3, 2013 by Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles in the game against the Oakland Raiders (49:20). In this game Foles achieved the maximum possible quarterback rating of 158.3, which Alex Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs succeeded on December 15, 2013 , again against the Oakland Raiders (56:31). Foles and Smith achieved this best value for the 42nd and 43rd times respectively since 1960. In addition, the New Orleans Saints made 40 first downs in the game against the Dallas Cowboys , which was also an NFL record. Finally, Broncos kicker Matt Prater scored a field goal from 64 yards and improved the previous record by one yard.

The 256 games were played in 17 game weeks, with each team playing 16 games and a game-free week ( bye week ) between the fourth and the twelfth week. Seventeen games were played as Monday Night Game , two of which were double headers in the first week. On the last weekend all games took place on Sunday. There were also 17 games on Thursday night, starting with the opening game on September 5th and three games on Thanksgiving . In the 16 games of the 17th week on December 29, 2013, all teams met - as has been customary since 2010 - against an opponent from their division.
