The 1980 NFL season was the 61st season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 7, 1980 and ended on December 22, 1980. The season ended with the Pro Bowl on February 1 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu , Hawaii .

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis announced ahead of the season that he intended to relocate the team to Los Angeles. This request was rejected by the team owners at their meeting on March 10, 1980. Davis then litigated the NFL. In May 1982 it was found that the NFL had violated antitrust law.

During the season, around 13.4 million viewers watched the 224 regular season games. This was an average of 59,787 spectators per game and thus the highest number in the entire history of the NFL to date. The stadiums were sold out at 92.4%.
