The 1946 NFL season was the 27th season of the National Football League (NFL). Prior to the season, Elmer Layden resigned as NFL commissioner and was replaced by Bert Bell , co-founder of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Meanwhile, the All-America Football Conference was formed to rival the NFL and the Los Angeles Rams became the first NFL team to play on the West Coast after moving from Cleveland , Ohio to Los Angeles , California . The Los Angeles Buccaneers in the 1926 season could only play away games in the eastern United States.
On October 1, a regular season game was played on a Thursday between New York and Boston , the last time before the 2010 season .
The season ends with the Chicago Bears defeating the New York Giants in the NFL Championship Game .
Significant rule change
- A forward pass that touches the goal post is automatically counted as incomplete. This rule is known as the "Baugh / Marshall Rule," named after the quarterback of the Washington Redskins , Sammy Baugh and the team owner George Preston Marshall . In the previous year's championship game, the Rams had scored a safety after Baugh threw the ball from his own end zone and hit the goal post (which was on the goal line for 41 seasons from 1933 to 1973 ). Those two points made the difference to the Rams' 15:14 win, and Marshall was so upset by the result that he was a key player in this rule change.
- The free exchange rule was restricted and substitutions were limited to no more than 3 players at the same time.
- The receiving team was allowed to carry back punts and missed field goal attempts behind their own goal line.
- The penalty for an invalid fair catch signal is 5 yards from the point of the signal.
- A fair catch signal is valid if it is made while the ball is in the air.
Division phase
In the Eastern Division, the Giants, Eagles and Steelers all had 4 wins and 2 losses on the seventh game day of the 11-day season, while in the Western Division, the Bears by a 10-7 win over the November 3rd Packers were one game ahead of the Rams. In week 8, the Giants defeated the Eagles 45:17, the Steelers lost to Detroit 17-7 and the Bears defeated the Rams 27:21 and extended their lead. In week 9, the Giants and Boston drew 28:28 and now had 5–2–1, while the Steelers defeated the Eagles 10: 7 and were 5–3–1 one game behind. The teams met in New York in week 10 and the Giants won 7-0 and took the lead again.
The last day of the season had the Giants (6-3-1) duel at home against the Redskins (5-4-1) and a Washington win would bring both to a final score of 6-4-1 and force a playoff. However, due to the 31-0 victory in New York, this did not come true. The game was watched by 60,337 spectators at the Polo Grounds, more than the 58,346 spectators a week later at the championship game.
Regular season
Note: Until 1972 , the NFL officially had no draws at the bottom of the table.
